What fun - deep tracks, squeaky cold snow, blue skies. Bearskin Lodge team did a great job maintaining these trails. I skied Ox Cart and Bear Cub and a few added short segments. All in great shape. I had to lift one ski a few times due to exposed or near-exposed rocks (mostly at hill crests where the wind has blown snow away). 99% of the time I just skied and smiled!

Today I skied the Golden Eagle side of this system. Grooming had been done overnight and skate deck and classic tracks were in great shape. Polar wax for temps just above zero. Coverage was good on the north side of Flour Lake but poor on the 3k loop that goes around the end of Flour Lake to connect to the Bearskin side. That was B skis territory and I jumped around a lot trying to avoid dirt patches. Good day in the cold.

Skied trails out of Bearskin Lodge. Deck and tracks were firm and fast. On the higher elevation trails I spent a lot of effort avoiding dirt in the tracks jumping in and out. On the roads, coverage was fine. I wish I had been on my B skis. I did not scratch my skis but would have liked to not worry about it. But temps and wind were manageable and it was a good day.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Classic and skated almost the entire system while staying there over the last three days. Overall, the system is in good to very good shape. Snow depth is a little lower than normal for end-December but the skiing was quite good and I used my best skis without worry. The only trails that would warrant some extra caution: west end connector trail from GEL to Bearskin there are a few rocks that are easy to avoid just below the snow, and Ridge Runner has a few dirty tilled up stretches under the trees. Tons of fun and hours of skiing.

Skied Bear Cub at Bearskin Lodge today. Great conditions. Good snow cover, freshly groomed. Both uphill and down very manageable.

[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Skied 24km of trails around Bearskin and Golden Eagle. Mostly very good conditions although fairly regular dirt/gravel spots on certain trails but pretty avoidable. They could use more snow but some really nice long stretches of good classic tracks and skating deck pop worth checking out!

B skis recommended for the link trail and a few select rocks poking up throughout the system, but overall awesome conditions! Had fresh corduroy in the afternoon on some trails, so very little traffic. Any trail that is a summer road was perfect, and the logging trail, red pine, cross Fox, and moose crossing were very good, with a few rocks on moose crossing. The north south link was very bumpy but passable. The snowmobile-groomed only is backcountry friendly only right now. Hoping that new snow will cover up the few remaining rocks, get out for the most scenic skiing in the north woods!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Everything was groomed again this morning. Trails are in great shape for December and we'd feel confident skiing most with B skis. Good skis could be used if you keep an eye out for the few patches of low-snow areas. The lake crossing and skijoring trails are packed but not groomed yet. A fair amount of slush is still present on Flour and Aspen but once that freezes up we'll get those trails in.

Skied out from Bearskin, and a glorious day it was! It's good or B skis conditions depending on where you go. Stick to the wide trails (e.g. Summer Home Road) and you can feel safe with your best. Venture onto some side trails (e.g. Beaver Dam Trail) and B skis might be preferred, but you can still get away with better skis if you pick your line well. I skied most of the trails between East Bearskin Lake and Flour Lake. Fantastic December conditions overall.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
We received between 2 to 6 inches of new snow depending on where the wind put it. No rain! We groomed everything except Moose Ridge today. Skate deck is a little soft. Grooming plans: We will be grooming everything again tomorrow morning, should set up great.
