Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Everything is groomed and track set throughout. I expect the skate deck to be a bit soft until skied in. Track is broken in places due to the ice/wind but very good most of the way.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied outer loop classic. Not great conditions. In some places the tracks are evident and, in those cases they are decent. In many other places there is just a mish-mash of multiple tracks or none at all. And in some spots there are new tracks to the right of where you would expect the tracks to be - the new ones apparently set by some good-hearted classic skiers. One particularly nice instance is where the new tracks go to the right of some little trees while the skate and used to be classic track stays to the left of the trees.

Enjoyed freshly groomed skate deck for a nooner today. Groomer did nice job incorporating the sparse amount of cold snow that was blowing around on the ground the last couple of days into the hard icy base layer. Good edging throughout. Classic track was left untouched, which I thought was the right call given what there is to work with.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Variable conditions ranging from a crusty skate deck, bordering on icy in many parts, to windblown powder. Otherwise coverage is still pretty good. Classic tracks seemed either filled in by the windswept snow or non-existent.

With the rarity of set tracks (except at the man-made snow venues) even after the recent snow, it was great fun to see real tracks at U of M Golf Course. This is an easy place to ski, a great place to try out my brand new Kahru skin skis. There was not a single spot that was a threat to my new skis and I had great fun.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Splendid! Crisp air, bright sunshine, only a light breeze, blue sky, and a layer of soft fluffy snow on top of a firm deck--about as good as it gets! For the first few laps I enjoyed contemplating the criss-cross geometry of the marks left by the few skaters ahead of us, but by the time two of us had completed four laps of both loops we had pretty much obliterated the pattern. Ah well, no harm done to the quality of skiing. Thanks Mitch for restoring the course after last week's difficult weather!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
New snow was groomed into the skate deck late last night (thanks David). Should help liven up the thin old snow a bit. We will see if there's enough to reset the classic track today.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I just finished skiing the classic outer trail at 11:00 am. As noted, the tracks are shallow, but they are there and the little bit of snow we got last night provides a good surface, not at all icy. So not the best of conditions, but certainly good and well worth the effort to get out there. Despite the cold air, the sun is bright and there is little or no wind. Even my thumbs stayed warm.

Grooming

Tilled up the icy skate surface (again) this afternoon. The thin old skate deck is good coverage, albeit thin. Classic track is shallow, but overall intact and has some snow that has blown in and been skied into it. I think resetting would make it worse. So will leave as is. Wouldn't it be fun to get new snow and get to lay down corduroy instead of crawling along reviving this old snow!? Let me know what it skis like.

A different experience from yesterday afternoon, when nice newly milled deck was tangible under blowing snow and intermittent sputtering of watery pellets. Good skiing conditions, weather not so good. That newly milled deck had crusted over solidly by noon today, interspersed with occasional patches of slow blown in cold coarse snow. That and 20+ MPH wind made today a balance exercise. Snow accumulating in classic track would have been a more consistent ride. Mother nature and the groomer have been trading blows almost daily here lately. Mother currently up by one. We know how this ends, but I'm hopeful there will be a few more rounds yet.
