Afternoon
Observation
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
We are unable to groom and lost lots of snow within the last 24 hours. The Meadow has crust skiing for rock skis with lots of grass poking through. Pipeline West is the same, but with only a small skiable stretch north of Power Dam Rd to just outside the North Campground. All other trails are not skiable.

Afternoon
Scheduling
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Scheduling - 1) The Park's annual candlelight event on Saturday Feb 3rd has been changed to a snowshoe event on its own trail to accommodate deteriorating conditions. 6-8pm at the Loon Lake lot with 1 mile snowshoe/hike on the Red Granite trail. 2) Friends of Copper Falls SP plans to do some minor touch up grooming with the snowmobile on Friday morning. Will provide report when completed. 3) This week we expect to finally take delivery of the Park's new grooming UTV that has been on order for a while. Although trail conditions are thin right now, we hope to finally be able to get everything packed and groomed in a more timely manner by now having two machines covering our 22km of trails supported by our crew of six grooming volunteers.

Morning
Grooming Observation
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Checked trails this morning, there are spring conditions right now. Expect crusty conditions in the morning and slush during the afternoon. Pipeline West and Meadow are in fair shape, 3-6in base and last tracked more than a week ago. We did set new track on one part of Meadow where it was thinning along the pines. There are infrequent piles of leaves exposed on Pipeline West but avoidable. Conditions are good for skate right now. Pipeline East is in poor shape due to thin coverage. Did not check Takesson or Vahtera but both seemed to have deep tracks at the trailhead/exits, but aging as it was last tracked more than a week ago. Red Granite is full of ruts from hikers.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Tried to catch the magic morning window of spring skiing at 7:30am, but failed. There was plenty of snow and a frozen crust but with such little snow and grooming this year there just isn't a compacted base for skating that can handle this warm weather. The meadow was squishy, the power line was squishy and uneven with exposed stuff everywhere. The section from the power line to the campground was skiable but soft. The campground to loon lake was rutted up with frozen tracks from skiers skiing in the soft snow the day before. Long story short, if you're looking to just poke along, it's always a good day to be at Copper Falls ( the best state park in WI). If you're looking to train for a certain ski race in February, you're better off doing squats or something at home.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied Takesson this morning, found it was better than expected. Grass/roots starting to appear, but easily avoided. Slushy track, but still skiable.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
There was good to adequate snow on the trail, the temps were warm today. Tracks are deeply set. The classic only Vahterra and Takesson loops are the best.

Evening
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Volunteer groomers were out today grooming and setting classic track on all trails - Vahterra, Takesson, Pipeline, Meadow and Red Granite (snowshoe). Conditions are fabulous with the skate deck firm and classic track smooth. With over a foot of snow in the woods, conditions should hold up pretty well. Enjoy your state park!

Afternoon
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Volunteer groomers have been working the last three days packing, rolling and combing the trails in the park - Vahterra, Takesson, Pipeline, Meadow and Red Granite trails all rolled and combed. We are trying to firm up the base after receiving 12 inches of dry, fluffy snow. We are not able to set track because of the early grooming conditions. Trail should be good to skate ski (and classic without track) with some soft spots. Enjoy these beautiful conditions with snow!
