Aside from our usual groom through the system, we have run the PB100 through Overlook and Deerstand loops to do some packing and leveling in preparation for this weekends snowfall. An important note: Deerstand will be closed due to thin cover, and Overlook would be acceptable rock/C ski terrain. All other trails in the system are in great shape.

Grand Avenue Nordic Center and Spirit Mountain are hosting the CXC Cup Season Opener this weekend. The race uses all the groomed GANC trails and parts of some lower Spirit Mountain runs, with a new race-only track set up run 14 that connects via a new spur called "Buzz Cut" to the Black Bear Loop. The course was flagged and fenced today and runs through Sunday.

The fresh bit of snow was just what the doctor ordered. Things have softened up a bit from the rain event and both skate and classic tracks are solid. Note: Tuesday, Jan 19th, there will be a HS race occurring at GANC for a majority of the day so it would be best to visit one of our neighboring trails for the day.

Fresh groom on all trails yielded great results! Good track and skate decks throughout with a much more forgiving skiable surface.

Following up on groomer's report, when we skate skied the trail around mid-day, the corduroy had set up hard where the most recent grooming had occurred, including the stadium. I'm sure it was a lot less icy than trails that have not been touched after the melt, but nothing as good as we have been experiencing lately! Around most corners and on edges of the skate lanes were some more skied-in areas were evident (maybe didn't get the last grooming pass??) that were not at all icy and were much smoother. If current conditions remain, it's a noisy ride across the set corduroy where you could catch an edge, but overall it still felt safe and stable. They did a good job keeping the downhill corners ski-able. When I jumped in the tracks they were fast, deep, very firm, and seemed a little icy. The highest part of the loop is still not groomed but most of the trail is. Grateful to have somewhere to go today in Duluth.

As expected, the rain/sleet/snow did not play too well with our current snow pack, but the beauty of a snowmade system is the ability to have enough base to keep grooming. Conditions are still good, the colder temps last night made the snow very dense, granular, and a little difficult to work with. All open trails are groomed with skate deck and classic track, tracks are fairly good through most of the system with a few spots where we met some very firm base and the track setter got a little shallow in the snow pack. All in all, should still be good skiing!

Very wet snow/rain overnight has saturated our base and made for some very dense snow. Stadium and lower loops have been groomed and are still in very good condition with good depth classic tracks. We will be closing off the upper loops today to do some pushing of snow to fine tune everything for the CXC Cup race the weekend of the 22-24th, so please stay below the DWP if you see the closed signs.

Fresh groom this morning on stadium, big bend and roller coaster. Snow is firm and cold, providing a very solid base. Fine tuning of the section above the DWP is slated for some time next week; we’ll keep you updated when that arrives.

[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
We’ve received 5” of very dry, fluffy snow down at GANC and it’s just what the doctor ordered! Conditions are looking great through the system, including the loop up and around the DWP. Since this section is new it is not quite in its final form but definitely skiable and groomed in full. It finally feels like winter has arrived!
