[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Well, the good news is that we received about 5 inches of wet heavy snow. The bad is that it is sitting on top of a layer of slush and its been too warm for the snow to set up well, proving difficult for grooming. Flat areas and low grades are not much of an issue for the heavy snowcats, but climbing hills (particularly when track setting) has become nearly impossible as the wet snow cannot support the weight of the equipment, causing us to bog down and dig in a little too much in some areas. There is track set in the stadium and about 50m up into the loops, but we had to stop there as the extra strain from using the track setting implements was detrimental to trail conditions. The lower snowmaking loops are groomed for skating below the second valve house; uphill from the valve house has a few passes done, but we had to pull out as the steeper hills in that area were causing issues. It is still ok for skating, but there is a few areas with a little mess to navigate through. We will have to wait and see how things play out overnight and hope for an improvement in conditions.

The freeze-thaw cycle that has moved in recently has been toying with our snow pack to mixed results: skating is still very solid and enjoyable through the system, classic is set through the system as well, but the track does vary in depth and overall quality based on the snow conditions underneath. The melting and freezing is creating a thick ice layer a few inches under the surface that has proven to be a bit problematic in some areas, resulting in some shallow tracking. There are still some very good sections out there, however!
The Deerstand loop remains closed due to very thin coverage on the big corner and the diminishing snow cover over the last few days. Overlook is open and does have tracks set, but has not been groomed in order to keep the tracks and skate deck in as good of condition as they can be. Coverage is thin through there as well so we are doing our best to avoid running equipment unless necessary.

I skied the lower loops this morning (with my preschooler). The trail had been PB groomed and was pretty nice. Even in the warming conditions (37 degrees at 11am), the trail held up nicely. Hoping for a few more days of skiing for the Birkie race! Good luck to all the racers!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The grooming schedule for our man-made snow ski trails is as follows: 7 days a week, completed by 0800, except on Monday and Tuesday when grooming should be completed by 0900. All but the upper loops are groomed. These natural snow upper loops - Deer Stand and Overlook - are corded but closed due to insufficient snow depth. We will continue to groom through the deep freeze later this week.

A nice coating of new snow provided a great freshening up of our base! All loops are groomed both skate and classic, and the stadium has some passes for skating up the center and one pair of tracks on either side. Overlook loop was combed as well, and is still in rock ski condition.

Aside from our usual groom through the system, we have run the PB100 through Overlook and Deerstand loops to do some packing and leveling in preparation for this weekends snowfall. An important note: Deerstand will be closed due to thin cover, and Overlook would be acceptable rock/C ski terrain. All other trails in the system are in great shape.

Grand Avenue Nordic Center and Spirit Mountain are hosting the CXC Cup Season Opener this weekend. The race uses all the groomed GANC trails and parts of some lower Spirit Mountain runs, with a new race-only track set up run 14 that connects via a new spur called "Buzz Cut" to the Black Bear Loop. The course was flagged and fenced today and runs through Sunday.

The fresh bit of snow was just what the doctor ordered. Things have softened up a bit from the rain event and both skate and classic tracks are solid. Note: Tuesday, Jan 19th, there will be a HS race occurring at GANC for a majority of the day so it would be best to visit one of our neighboring trails for the day.

Fresh groom on all trails yielded great results! Good track and skate decks throughout with a much more forgiving skiable surface.
