I classic skied at Hyland this morning. The tracks were good but the base was sugar. I had to work harder to get a good kick even on the flats. The hills required me to really pay attention to my technique. The skate deck looked to have a fair amount of sugar with the hills being deeper, maybe birkie wave 3. It was really nice to greet the new year on skis.

Hyland track was a bit loose at 3pm. I classique skied the course where the track varied from super soft to really nice and firm. I was disappointed by the skaters who were skating on the track. The trail is plenty wide for all. Thank you to the crew for working to provide a decent skiable option for the skiers.

The overnight snow turned the skating deck to mush, so it was tough but a good workout. Thank you to the groomers who've done such a great job under difficult circumstances.

At 9:15 am, the trail was in reasonably good shape - loose sugar on the climbs particularly the last one on Willow and the NW and west-east one on south end of Star but generally dry. Sugar was shallow and fast enough that even my 71-year-old self was able to completely skate every climb at least once in my two laps except the last one on Willow and the west-east one on the south end of Star. The Willow downhill continued to be fast and carried me consistently from the top to the turn past the timing shack with only a few strokes. It was 32 degrees and cloudy.

Love Hyland. Thankful for the park crew who have provided a local place to ski, and afterward sit by the fire with a cocoa and a candy bar. Snow coverage/skiing is currently limited to the Star and Willow Loops (~2 km?). Lots of traffic on the trail as I classical skied for about an hour around 1:00 today—a couple of teams out burning up the trail as well as a few dozen adults and ten littles. The conditions were, in a word, sugar; moderately deep sugar over a slick, not yet icy, base, on both the classic tracks and the skate deck. The guns sit nearby, next to some bigger piles of man-made snow; hopefully we'll soon be enjoying fresher, drier white stuff and a few more km coverage.

First time at Hyland trails, lots of fun. Snow was good, could feel the ice below on the main hill. We will be back.

A nice morning for a ski. Tracks were well set as of 7am. Skin skis were searching for grip especially on the Willow hill. The left turn at the bottom of Star loop is pretty thin on snow seems like there is ice right under the surface. Still a great outing.

Firsthand: Classic Observation
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Classic skied at 3:00 pm. Tracks existed on about 50% of the loop. As another skier reported, the downhill by the playground had three snowplow lanes which by 3:30 pm were starting to ice up and get a little dicey. Good news: maintenance crew was connecting up some of the snow guns on my last loop. Fingers crossed they get turned on tonight!

At my 11:40 am start, the trail was in generally good condition, certainly better than yesterday. Still a fair amount of sugar buildup except on the chalet spur and the Willow downhill but it was drier and not as deep as yesterday except on the NW Star climb and the subsequent west to east Star climb on the south end of the loop. Skier traffic was pretty light. It was 33 degrees according to my car's thermometer. Would have been a nice ski except I forgot I'm now apparently suffereing from asthma and didn't use my inhaler ahead of time.

Mashed potatoes on the skate deck. But still fun and a beautiful day. Downslope from Star loop is chewed up and had mild chutes from snowplowing.
