Skied only on snowmaking loops. Perfect conditions for classic skiing. The tracks were firm and I had plenty of grip with my skin skis. Skate skiing was great too. Very little loose snow on the climbs.

Snow making loops in great shape. With the lower overnight temperatures, the corduroy set up real nice. I skated. Tracks looked, unsurprisingly, glazed.

Battle Creek continues to impress me with their expertise in constructing and maintaining quality ski trails. I skated several laps on the Pond, Prairie, South Tree, and North Tree loops, and despite the dearth of natural snow plus prolonged periods of thawing, this morning I found the snowmaking trails to be in very good condition. There were only a few other skiers when I arrived about 9:00. The skate deck was solid with a thin layer of corduroy on top. Classic tracks looked to be pristine in most places. Even with the small number of skiers, the corduroy was skated out pretty quickly as everyone was skiing multiple laps. However, the remaining snow continued to produce good push and good directional ski stability. Glide was a little less than desirable, but generally not bad. The inside lines of the downhill curves at the south end of South Tree and north end of North Tree were starting to get scraped down and exhibited snow being pushed to the outside lines through the curves, but still had enough edgeable snow to make them controllable when I left. Fun ski today. Big thumbs-up to the snow managers and groomers.

Beautiful corduroy this morning. Trails are in amazing shape, get out there and enjoy. There were no ropes closing off the back / natural snow hills but they were not groomed and looked fully iced over. All the rest are amazing. Thank you groomers!

The entire snowmaking loops were open. Given today's temperature gradient from high 30's in the early morning to the high teens by night - it was 19 degrees when I started, it should be no surprise that the perimeter trails I skied were in only fair condition. Snow was generally firmly packed where I generally had no trouble getting bite with my skis but there was occasional frozen corduroy that could be really treacherous particularly towards the bottom of Cowabunga. Being alone, the only skier on the trail, and 73, I snowplowed the downhills really cautiously. Unfortunately. Snowplowing on frozen corduroy doesn't work really well. My skis started chattering so badly when I hit the frozen corduroy towards the bottom of Cowabunga I was afraid I was going lose control. Just as I was thinking I might need to sit down or fall to one side, I got past the frozen corduroy and regained control.

Grooming [ Trails Open: Most, ]
|

The World Cup, Silver and Enchanted Forest trails were groomed today. There are still some ruts and thin icy spots but it is skiable and has been opened. As always be cautious on the steep hills and tight corners. The manmade snow trails are in excellent condition so come on out and enjoy the weekend.

The man-made snow was in great condition - firm skate deck and good tracks all around. The natural snow areas were still closed.

Skated several laps on the Pond, Prairie, South Tree, and North Tree loops. Great trail coverage, thin corduroy over firm skate deck (classic tracks also looked to be in excellent condition). I had good push and good control. Glide was good where the trail gets more sun, but a little sticky in the more shaded areas. Corduroy was evident throughout, even on the curves and climbs where it was just starting to get skated out. My truck sensor was reading 18°F when I pulled into the parking lot about 10:00 and 20°F when I left about an hour later. The sky was crystal clear, and the sunshine plus the excellent grooming made it a great day to be skiing at Battle Creek.
