Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
I did a pre-dawn ski on JD Rivers, Tornado Alley, and the golf course. Grooming last night smoothed out most of the deep tracks from yesterday, but the snow is still quite soft. No classic tracks, except a few areas with some shallow tracks that might be left from skiers yesterday. Overall great skiing - soft and smooth. A fair bit of unevenness and quite a few areas with tall grasses (some more like branches) poking through. Under 55 looks like it's covered but it's not really - I strongly suggest taking off the skis, especially on the south end. Bassett Creek loop is quite grassy; golf course has a few rough spots. Hope it lasts!

Snowmaking area has good depth (obviously), but there is a chance of a scratch or two if you go to the natural snow trails. Great day for classic skis, but I ventured with skate anyway. Snow is a bit soft (and very soft on natural snow trails), thus a little slow, but fun regardless.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The Loppet has 1.5 K of snowmaking trails open, starting in Lower Stadium and going up to Coach’s corner. All natural snow trails except for Judy Loop were rolled this morning and can be accessed via the Trailhead or Wirth Beach parking lot. There is no connection from the natural snow trails to the snowmaking trails at this time.

Nice addition of the lower loop - the hills at the base of the catwalk. Skate lane is a bit bumpy and rutty but that is to be expected with a first grooming. Classic tracks look rock solid. Both PistenBullys out when I was there.

Got to the trail at 8:30 AM. The track is still the 200 meters (or so) of manmade snow in the start/finish area. I skated, my friend classic skied. It was good. However, I was most interested to see the Piston Bully grooming just to the west of the start/finish area. That looks promising.

The 400 meter man-made snow loop was in great shape this morning - good for skating and solid classic tracks. Snow guns have been making snow all week so there are lots of piles of snow all around just waiting to be spread out! Mill Valley Market is now open at 8am, so great for an early morning bite.

Fast and firm track at 7:30 this morning. Was a bit sugary by the time we left at 8:30. The key to gerbil track skiing is getting out early. Marcialonga training began this week and this is best mother nature training can give us for now.

Night

Only the small loop on the lower stadium is open. Good skiing but some chunks are a little icy somehow, even though it's been above freezing. Crowded in the afternoons, I'd recommend skiing in the morning on B skis.

Skied 50 laps this morning bright and early. Was first one on it at 5:30 and had the loop to myself for almost 30 min. Still about a 350 meter loop with a double track down the middle. It was pretty fast with the warm temps, and seemed to be holding up fine despite the warm weather. By the time I left around 6:45 there were probably 25 people out including a group lesson and a handful of Washburn skiers (GO MILLERS!). Looks like there’s lots of snow piled up so guessing the loop will get quite a bit larger as soon as we get a couple of cold days!
