Minnesota High School Ranking Process Explained

Every wonder how the State High School rankings are done?

Well, I spend a couple of hours per week looking at all the results on Skinny Ski and any Junior National Qualifiers that may exist. Often there are two JNQ's on a given weekend and I have to figure out who is skiing better based on the two races. For the regular races listed on Skinny Ski, I often just have one race to use. If a skier has a great race they move up or are added to the rankings. If they have a bad race, or are sick or just plain ski easy due to a bigger race in a few days, they move down the list.. Usually the top 1-4 ranked skiers don't move much, they are the best and stay there. From 5-20, there is a pretty narrow gap and one week a skier can be around 5th and the next drop out of the top 20 with a bad performance.

The Giants Ridge race will give me a more accurate list of who is among the top 20 skiers. This race will put some skiers on the list that may not be as fast on flatter races but can ski very fast on the hilly Giants Ridge courses.

If you see an athlete you feel deserves to be ranked you can contact me at:
[email protected]; Every year there are skiers who ski very fast just before state and often don't get noticed then have a top 10 performance.

This is my second year of volunteer work, if you are interested in helping or taking over next year, feel free to contact me.
