State Nordic Ski Racing Meet Postponed

Minnesota State High School League officials have postponed the 2006 State Nordic Ski Racing Meet until Tues., Feb. 21, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The meet was scheduled for tomorrow (Fri., Feb. 17). However, the highest high temperature forecast for the area on Friday is 10-degrees-below-zero. "We checked with three different weather services and the best forecast for a high was 10-below-zero at noon," stated Rich Matter, tournament director. "That is well below our safe zone for the skiers." The Cold Index followed for all League events does not allow any practice or competition of greater than 1 minute in duration if the ambient air temperature is 4-degrees-below-zero or colder.

The schedule for Tuesday's postponed Nordic ski racing meet has been adjusted also to start one hour later than originally scheduled. The boys' 5K freestyle race will start at 11 a.m., followed by the girls' 5K freestyle at noon, the boys' 5K classical at 2:30 p.m., and the girls' classical at 3:30 p.m. The State Alpine Ski Meet was held at Giants Ridge today (Thur., Feb. 16).
