The Black Lake Loppet drew 25 skiers to the Black Lake Biathlon trails north of Bemidji on March 11. Ken Grantier of Bemidji took top honors, edging out John Deden. Ellen Anderson of Ely came in third. Race promoters staggered the starting times and were able to squeeze over 80% of the finishers into a 10 minute window at the finish. 3 skiers took the mandatory 30 second penalty rather than eat at least a half of a donut at the 10k feed station, including Kaitlin Bakker, who was pushed out of the 13th position by the penalty, allowing Ken McBride of Turtle River to win the “Lucky 13th Place” award. Wynn Roberts, starting 27 minutes back, recorded the fastest gross time, but failed to crack the top 10.
