Double Pole Derby Ski Race Will Run Sunday, Jan. 21

The 26th Annual Double Pole Derby race, originally scheduled for December 30th, will take place Sunday, Jan. 21st on the Birkie Trail at Hwy OO east of Seeley. Recent snowfall has created skiing conditions that are fair to good. More snow is forecast prior to race day. The race course will include the loop trails and the Birkie trail south from the OO trailhead. Races are for skiers of all abilities, age 10 or older. They include a 5kilometer classic technique race at 9:30, which will only be run if snow depth allows tracks to be set, and a 10k Freestyle or skating race at 10:30, which will definitely be run. Skiers can sign up for either race or both. Awards will be given to the top 2 finishers in each of 10 age classes. A “Best of Both” award will be given to the top male and female racers competing in both races. T shirts will be awarded to the first 200 registrants. The 5k and 10k races are $20 each. A 5k Freestyle race for pre-registered high school teams only will follow the 10k. Registration will be held at the warming cabin at the OO trailhead beginning at 8:00 am. The event is a fund raiser for the Hayward Area Ski Trails Association, which provides groomed and lighted skiing in the Hayward area.
