Trail Reports

2022-2023 season

Firsthand: Classic

Based on an earlier post we thought the trail had been groomed. Maybe the overnight snowfall covered it. No matter. We happily blazed through the fresh snow on the best trail in northern Wisconsin. Rock Lake Trail never disappoints. It is a stunning setting and the trail is exquisite with wonderful ups and downs. Perfection.

Thank you to the groomers and trail breakers. All trails groomed with care and precision except for the 16k loop (probably due to the difficulty of grooming thru over a foot of wet snow). I recommend skiing your favorite trail.

Observation Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Most ]
Rock Lake has a good 3-4 feet of snow in the woods. This winter was amazing but challenging for the grooming crew of Forest Service staff and volunteers. We are going to stop grooming operations for the year. I want to say a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers who worked out on the trails this winter, and all the skiers who enjoyed the trails. There is still plenty of snow out there, so hope you can get out there and enjoy the beautiful woods.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Rock Lake received around 10-12" of new snow this past weekend. Trails were packed and groomed and the results looks great! Thanks to our A-team for getting the trail groomed for the week. Time is running low to enjoy the skiing for this year, so skip some work and get out there and enjoy it! 16 K and Rock Lake loop are not groomed.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
We packed the 12 inches of new snow today with the snowmobiles. It should set up overnight, and we plan on grooming and setting tracks tomorrow morning. This might be the last chance to ski freshly groomed tracks at Rock Lake. Hope to see you out there!

Grooming Lost/Found
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
All Rock Lake trails (except the 16K and lake loop) were groomed this morning and are in very good shape with the 6" of fresh snow. Tracks should set up very well, enjoy some early March skiing. There was a Subaru vehicle key found at the parking lot, it will be available to the owner at the Great Divide District Ranger office in Hayward.

Checked out rock lake for the first time today. Fantastic trail! As noted in previous reports, all but the 16 k loop were groomed. It was quite a contrast to cruise single track trails in solitude compared to the Birkie on Saturday.

Grooming

Groomed the 2, 4, 7 and 11K trails this morning. Several passes were made to pack down this recent snowfall which resulted in very well formed deep tracks with no debris. Conditions and weather looks great, enjoy these great rolling trails this Birkie weekend!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
We groomed all the Rock Lake trails (except the 16K and Rock Lake trail) this morning, using the rakes to break up the old icy tracks and setting new tracks with the fresh 2 to 3" new powder. The tracks are shallow in places, but considering the conditions, they are not too bad. Some debris worked its way to the surface, but overall conditions are good and it's a great day to get back out on the trails! We'll do our best to get out as soon as possible to groom any fresh snow, enjoy!

We skied on the groomed classic 2K loop which was a bit icy but lovely with the blue sky and sunbeams! The 4K loop was icy and fast on the downhills. Hills are a bit of a challenge to climb with the ice. However, there are always lovely unexpected views and turns that make you want more! Enjoy!
