Packed and set track on south suomi trails. Didn't do the connecting trail to orange lake road. Got stuck at the bottom of the mean hill, use caution when coming down.

Skied all of the trails that were groomed from the North Suomi Hills trailhead off HWY 38. Came away with a better understanding of the trail system. There is a nice novice loop if you head north out of the parking lot. The trails toward Kremer Lake and around Balloon Lake are for daredevils, even in slower snow. If you are an average skier and would like to experience this beautiful backcountry try this approach: Park at the lot at the end of Orange Lake Road and head North toward Kremer Lake. Take a left at the first branch and go south to Pot Hole lake. When the trail starts to exceed your comfort level, return back the way you came.

Generally nice trail conditions today. South part of Suomi was groomed after the 10" storm last week but not after the smaller one. The connector trail was ungroomed between South Suomi and Orange Lake Road. I skied tracks into this section, and others followed, so now it is a tracked segment North Suomi was all groomed. Trail conditions there were excellent! There were a few sun-baked areas, but those didn't slow things down too much.

South Suomi not groomed but skiers did ski in the tracks. Continued to North Suomi parking lot which was full with seven cars. Lots of good classic skiing if you are a good classic skier... :) Balloon Loop has lots of fun but somewhat scary twisty turny downhills. Good grooming and soft snow on the sides helped to slow descent. Others bravely ventured to Spruce Island Loop. Beaver Pond loop nice cool down. All in all, a great day to classic ski!

Observation

Extra note on the North Suomi Trail system. I stopped by and snow plowed the North parking lot and the Orange Lake Road to the trail head parking lot. I see someone had skied north towards Kremer Lake, which was good to see someone went out to enjoy the fresh groomed trails. Parking lots are clean, trails are ready, go out and get that last skiing in!

Grooming

Groomed and track set all trails north of the Orange Lake Road. (North Suomi trails). 3 to 4 inches of fresh snow made for a nice track set. There was drifting in many areas near the lakes, so use caution as those areas will be a little uneven. Very nice sunny day, please get out and enjoy the trails while you still can!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails north of Orange Lake Road groomed and track set. The one short trail on the east side of the north end of the chain of lakes (Beaver) I didn't do because I didn't get that packed prior. Lots of fresh snow. There was however some very serious drifting, but all and all it came out fine. Running the system first was a must so one could groom without getting stuck. (And still did). Nice sunny day! Please get out and enjoy the skiing, as there probably will not be but a couple weeks left of the snow.

Groomed south Suomi trail along with Amen. About 6 inches of fresh snow. Tried to do it in one pass, but the drifts along Hill lake got me. Didn't do the connecting trail to the orange lake road, just went around Big Horn lake.

Faithful groomer Randy groomed Amen and south Suomi to north parking lot. I did ski in tracks with only an inch of so of fresh snow from north to Adele Lake and around Beaver Pond. Great fun! Skiing was also great in the beautifully groomed trail past Kremer Lake to Orange Lake Road. Spruce Island and Balloon loops have not been groomed and should be just as much fun skiing in the recently set tracks. I met snowshoers who were careful to stay off the set tracks for most of the Beaver Pond loop.

The grooming is impeccable. Unfortunately, the drizzle created a glaze that made the trails fairly treacherous. I avoided launching myself off a cliff or into a tree, but will wait to enjoy these trails again when they are drier or softened in the sun.
