Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Squeezing out the last skiing. Strided from Mosquito Brook past Gravel Pit to 23K and back. Shallow tracks but holding, Lots of glide but needed lots of stick (poles). Almost no oak leafs to hop around in the tracks. Good snow coverage yet. Saw one other skier during the sunny blue morning.

Perfect conditions mid morning (32-37 degrees). Smooth fast silent (not crackly icy) corduroy. Just starting to compress a bit in the sunny areas by 10:30 or so. Complete coverage, groomed at OO and skate trail to Boedecker. Talked to folks that skied all the way from Start to OO and reported it was fast and fun. Tracks not reset, but still intact and shallow. Lots of smiles. Best skiing of the year for me! Thanks ABSF,

Still full coverage on Birkie trail! A bit icy in the morning, soft after it gets to mid 30s. There is a sweet window with excellent skating, especially if there is not full sun in the open areas. Tracks are getting shallow, but skin skis work well. We skied a bit from Boedecker but were a little too early so switched to fat biking (not on the birkie trail!) Photos are just north of OO. Still a few cool mornings to grab some final skiing!

Skied Start Line to High Point on the Skate, back on the Classic. Great spring skiing! Crusty and fast when I started, started to soften up as it approached noon. Much less debris than south of High Point, which I skied Tuesday. No new grooming since then, but appears there hasn't been much traffic either. Appeared as though North End trails were groomed last night. There will be great morning skiing after nights it dips below freezing. This was a lovely last ski of the season for me, now heading back to Madison and putting on storage wax...

Skied OO to High Point on the Classic, back on the Skate. Relatively slow going with the melt, but the base is still in exceptional shape. Decent number of patches with leaf litter, twigs, and cones, but most are very easy to avoid as they've melted themselves down into the snow. Get out there and enjoy it while it lasts!

At 9 this morning, the Birkie trail was very fast. Downhills were somewhere between thrilling and terrifying. As it got closer to 32 degrees, the conditions were much more comfortable. I think skiing will be good for a while if we hit the window when temps are close to freezing. Spring skiing! So much fun.

Great skiing again today on the Birkie trail. Fresh corduroy and classic track running north from OO to the Firetower water stop. Skied north on the classic trail and returned on the skate trail. The warm weather has started to uncover some of the tree debris and pine cones that got buried 12 inches of snow ago. Particularly on the classic trail. But there is still a lot of great skiing to be had.

Really great conditions yet on the Birkie trail south of OO. Plenty of base left and fresh grooming as of last night. It started to soften up as the day went on particularly the sections in full sun. Would have been a smart move to get out an hour or so earlier (mid-morning).

Skied the loops at OO. Dusting of snow over frozen snow made for fast skiing. The groomer was heading south. Some debris on trail, but easy to go around.

This afternoon I checked out a short loop using both the skate and classic trails between OO and Boedecker. No one had skied while it was soft and slushy so there were no ruts. The skiing is good if you are comfortable with hardpack; ski poles did not punch through any soft spots yet there was enough new snow for control. I give it an FF rating; fast and fun. Spring skiing is the best!
