Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
The Cable/Hayward area received a few inches of snow last night. As the temps have increased, it is now too warm to groom (even the snow-making section). Check back as we will update again as soon as it cools to the point we can groom.

Very good skiing can be found at the Birkie start area in Cable. There is a level base and plenty of coverage of man-made and some natural snow. About three kilometers of trails are groomed and offer very good control.

I skied the snowmaking loop at the Birkie Start TH early this morning. Fantastic conditions both skate and classic. Skate was firm - fast, fresh cord, classic had a day or two old tracks, granular ice in the bottom, but still very good. The rest of the trail up that way is ski-able, but I'd suggest B or rock skis. Thanks for the hard work ABSF!

In general, very good skiing at the start area trailhead. A few short sections are a little icy after the recent thaw/freeze cycle. Classic tracks are showing some wear from heavy use. The trail crew managed to connect two of the out and back sections making a full loop with more challenging terrain. So this little length of trail got much more interesting overnight. Kudos to the ABSF for continuing to work on these trail segments through the warm weather. As a heads up, it looks like folks are now skiing all segments in both directions so be aware of other skiers going up or coming down the steeper or more technical sections.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
The snowmaking loop/trail is now up to about 3k! We pushed newly made snow down a new section of the trail which now forms another loop, providing more groomed and tracked trails just in time for another weekend of great skiing. Over the weekend, we will continue to groom the snowmaking section as needed which will likely be daily. At the end of the day today, we will groom the snowmaking section again. Get up to the Birkie Trailhead and enjoy!

Skied from Boedecker TH, from past km 35 to about km 31 on the skate and back on the classic trail. Despite the warm up and the fact the snow is not rolled or dragged, the trail is still quite skiable. Only one minor bare spot, and decent skiing if you are used to rough conditions. Praying for snow!

Firm, fast surface for skating. A 3/4 to full depth classic track in most places. The man manmade loop is frozen hard so pretty bullet proof but they're grooming often so there is plenty of corduroy and loose snow to edge. Snowmaking was going full force while I was there. At this point, they're only 100 yards or so away from connecting 2 shorter sections into one longer (and very challenging) loop. Once that's done, you'll really be able to get your climbing in if you want.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
If you are an early morning or evening skier, the Birkie has good news...the snowmaking loop has lights! The lights are small but will provide enough illumination for navigation. For now, they are all along the 1k loop. Come check them out!

Pulled into the birkie start area at 7:20 am this morning. Groomer had just begun setting track. Entire man made loops are groomed with fresh corduroy. and in wonderful condition. Planned to ski 10 K classic, but with the wonderful tracks it was difficult to quit after 15 + K's. Will be great this weekend. Enjoy!

We extended the length of the human-made loop/trail by about .5 km, extending the total length of the human-made section to about 2 km. There are 3 sections of the trail where we have pushed snow out and groomed, making those 3 sections of the trail out-and-backs. That 2 km length of trail was groomed (including classic tracks) again this morning and will be ready for some great weekend skiing. Enjoy!
