2022-2023 season

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
I just finished a cautious ski using my old Salomons. Good to very good edges and as expected it was firm and fast yet manageable. I skied all of the recently groomed trails except Juba's Run. Be careful coming down the hill between numbers 5 & 6 (the hill leading to the open field near the overflow parking). That area has an icy thin base with plenty of debris. Overall a great ski, I'll be back this afternoon!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Lower trails (Lower Pines, Upper Pines, Logging Road, Fuji Cutoff, Spring Run, Skyline and Juba's Run) were groomed tonight. Several passes turned into what looks like a decent skate lane. Debris and a couple very thin spots will be encountered with other sections being debris free.

Trails were getting extra firm / icy by late afternoon. Surprised that it wasn't softer due to the warm up today. The magic of Hoffman holding the chill in. Could be quite icy in the morning until it warms up and softens in the warmer temps. Still amazing coverage and depth. Some minor leaf debris collecting in the tracks. Couldn't get any hard waxes to kick on the glaze. You'll need klister, skins, or scales until the next grooming or snow cycle.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Still good conditions as of this afternoon. Had a great classic ski and had the entire place to myself. Some sections of trail had quite a bit of leaf debris/seeds in the tracks, while other sections were completely clear. Very fast tracks and deck. This base will last a long time.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All trails were groomed and tracked at night. A little leaf litter remains. Trails have smoothed out nicely with minimal soft spots. It will be the best skiing Hoffman has seen so far this season!

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Two of us out for a cold classic ski this morning. Trails have not been groomed since Friday's snowfall. There is 1-2" fresh on the skate deck. Thanks to whoever was out classic skiing earlier we were able to ski in most of the tracks reasonably well using my Swedish forefathers methods. Kick was fantastic. Logging Road, the Pines, Spring Run, Fuji, and Skyline were all skiing well. (Does anyone ever classic up Buck Ridge?) Some minor oak leaves to contend with but nothing big. There is so much snow and so much coverage. The next groom should set it up. Don't wait for that though. Wait because it's cold.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The two plus inches of snow we received over the last few days was groomed and tracked. Several passes were made on most trails to widen corners and pack soft areas. Additional branches and debris were removed from trail edges. All trails look to be much improved since last week.

So great to be out at Hoffman again this year! Thanks to everyone for the trail clearing and mechanical work. Coverage is fantastic everywhere. No sign of sawdust. 1/2 inch+ of new snow overnight (where did that come from?). You got the feeling that a pass to groom that in would even things out and really set up nicely. Classic tracks were shallow but very skiable.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We finished clearing all trails of down trees on Wednesday. Today all trails were rolled, groomed and tracked. Only a few spots have sticks and sawdust poking through and will be easy to avoid. Expect soft conditions and a few bumpy areas.

Observation
[ Trails: Closed, Rock skis ]
We are still working on getting the numerous downed trees cleared at Hoffman Hills. Groomer Dave has spent the last few weeks clearing with other volunteers joining when they can, however with our gator in the shop it is a slow process as the only access to the trail is by using snowshoes. He has made tremendous progress from where it started and we hope to have our machine back by Monday which will allow access to the upper trails. We will continue to update you on the conditions.
