2017-2018 season

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Trail conditions at Hiram are good over all. The trail is pretty clean other than some scattered leaves so you can use your good skis. The track is set to full depth in most areas but there are some areas where there was not enough loose snow on top of the hard base so the track gets a little shallow in places. Was a beautiful day for skiing with lots of sunshine and fresh white snow. Get out and enjoy some good skiing before the next melt comes along.

Evening
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
We picked up another couple inches of snow today so I was finally able to groom Hiram again. There are still some areas where the forest litter mixed in the snow is sticking thru so that is why I gave the B ski rating but over all the snow is fairly clean. I think the track turned out fairly well but I finished the track setting pass after dark so it was difficult to see how it was looking. Get out and ski while the snow conditions are still good, don't let the cold weather stop you.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
A dusting of snow last evening helped to cover up more of the leaves, stick, needles and bits of pine cones that are in the track. There is still enough depth to the track to stay locked in even on the down hill runs. It was a beautiful calm sunny day for skiing at Hiram today. Over all it is still worth going out for a ski there. Remember it is groomed for classic skiing only, no skating. The base is so thin we really need some new snow to be able to groom again and do a good job.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Track is getting shallow and pretty dirty in some areas. There was a little dusting of fresh snow that covered up most of the ice so hard wax would probably work. I still had klister on from last weekends icy conditions which was working fine today. The worst areas for tack being dirty was any place under the pines. The first loop had been walked on so the sides are some what chewed up. Overall it is still worth getting out for a ski at Hiram. It has not been groomed since January 15 but we really need more snow before trying to groom again or we might make it worse with the base so thin in most areas.

Skied Hiram late this morning while it was still below freezing. The track was very icy and fast so glide was no problem but the hard kick waxes were not working to well. The track has gotten shallow with the warm temps this week and more leaves & sticks have fallen in the track. There are no bare spots yet but the base is thin so we need it to cool down and snow more before it can be groomed again. It is still a fun ski but conditions are far from ideal. I plan on going back tomorrow but I will be using klister wax in order to get better grip.

Morning
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed this morning after the 2 or 3 inches of fluffy new snow yesterday. Just a few scattered Oak leaves otherwise the track is pretty clean. Not enough new snow to set a really good deep track but still very good skiing. It was a little slow this afternoon with the cold temps and fresh snow blowing into the track in places. Get out and enjoy the skiing before the next melt comes along.

Beautiful afternoon for skiing at Hiram with the snow falling, very quiet and peaceful. Around 2 or 3 inches of new snow today so all the leaves, grass, twigs, bark and dirt were covered up. Conditions are getting better with the little 2 or 3 inch snow falls adding up.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
I groomed and set track on the entire trail system this afternoon. We only had around 2 or 3 inches of new snow to work with so there are still areas with leaves, needles, bark and twigs sticking thru the snow. The track is not as good as I would like it but it is still worth getting out for a ski.

Afternoon

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Trail was groomed and tracked Saturday morning and is holding up well. Base is thin so there are areas where grass and leaves and sticking up thru the snow but not enough to slow you down. The track is firm and deep on most of the trail, just a few areas it gets a little shallow. Some damage from the deer walking on the trail but not bad. Beautiful quiet sunny days for skiing. Will be heading out for another ski this afternoon.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Packed and set track on all of Hiram Ski Trail this morning. Base is very thin but turned out ok. Probably don't want to use your best skis yet. Need more snow to get a better track set but still worth going out for a ski if you don't mind the subzero temps.
