Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 61 to 68 of 68    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, December 16, 2017
Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skiing is getting better each day. This is the first day of the season that tracks could be set, and in some areas they were fantastic but in the shallow areas, they of course were not as good. Beautiful conditions to be out on the trails today, with temps in the teens, light breeze, light fluffy flakes floating down.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
More snow fell overnight than NOAA had predicted so that was rolled down this morning. With the addition of 4", our rough trail conditions will continue to improve. Looks like we get more tonight and Friday as well.

Skied the new River Trail extension and the rest of that loop. It was groomed, so the skiing is getting faster! The thin and icy places are really filling in with our continued snowfall.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
All trails were rolled late today, except for the tower loop in Churning Rapids, which is not accessible to grooming equipment due to deep water at the triangle. Wet sections are improving with this cool weather. The trails will be packed again as snow falls, to help freeze the water. Skiing today was good considering the snow depth is too shallow for tracks to be set. Could get away with B skis but I stuck to my rock skis.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic

Beautiful skiing on fluffy snow. Trails have been rolled but are still thin or wet in places, especially Quincy Trail at the Tomasi end. St Uhlro's Loop and Pine Loop in nicer shape.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
All trails were rolled today again. No tracks set but skis do glide nice and straight on the soft surface. Depth is improving but many wet areas remain which are easily skied around.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Rolled the city side trails, the gorge including the New River Trail Extension, Vista, and the newly re-opened Outback Trail. Snow depths vary throughout the system, so expect rocks, stumps, and water crossings. Trail packing will continue over the next few days. Note that the trails are never closed - but not all segments are packed as of today.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Rock skis ]
The groomers packed the small loop at Tomasi Trailhead to check the snow depth, and found it far too shallow to go any further. We'll need more snow for the system to be packed and groomed. I used back country skis and found snow depth from very thin to 10". Any day on skis is a good one so no complaints about conditions but expect to wait a while before Maasto can be groomed. As always, the trails are open at all times for skiing, snow shoeing, and snow biking. Once grooming begins, walkers please use snow shoes.
