Conditions: very good for skate, fresh grooming.
Skated all trails late afternoon. New snow (~2") was groomed in today and the skate deck was in great condition. The new snow was relatively humid/warm so not so fast but left over pure fluoro from the Birkie made it seem so. Some ridging in on the downhills from some snowplowing in the new snow but overall the conditions were very very good. The classic tracks were a bit more shallow than usual, likely due the recent thaw and then new snow but seemed fairly fast on the downhills. The base is quite deep so should have some good skiing in the weeks to come. Thanks again Snowflake crew.

Absolutely lovely skiing. 10K and 5K were groomed today for both skate and classic. Lots of beautiful snow, with no ice, no slush, and no dirt. Use your best classic and skate skis. There should be great skiing for quite a while.

Snowflake in excellent shape after the warm weekend. Mid 20s, snowing pretty hard on Sunday afternoon, I think it is lake effect. Snowflake crew had groomed the crust after the freeze after the warm weekend (thanks guys!), and then there was 2 to 3 inches of new snow out there, and still snowing when we left about 4 PM. Should be great skiing this week.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
This morning was one of those very, very, very special times on skis. Forgive me if I wax poetic. It was one of those days that Ull (or Ullr), the Norse god of skiing (and hunting), gives to us in payment for the days when we have ventured out on far too little snow, or gone out in 15 below zero with a strong northwest wind. About 33 F when I arrived and 37 F when I left, and the skiing the fastest I have had this year, by some margin. I already had 20 km on the Fast Wax blue paste on my skis, but I took time to put in some structure and brush it out before heading out early. The skate lane on the main part of Jane's 5 K was the fastest, having had the most traffic, but Special K and the 10 K were also lightning fast. I hopped into the solid classic tracks lots of times for fun double poling. Starting to soften and slow (or was I just tired after almost 4 hours?) when I left about 11:30 AM. Min Farfar (my paternal Grandfather) was born in Ullfors, "Ull's rapids", Sweden, and in addition to the Snowflake trails, I add a picture of Ull.

Conditions: Excellent, well groomed for skating. Tracks looked great as well.
My first time out at Snowflake, skied Wednesday night and it was wonderful. Love skiing under the lights at night and the trails were in excellent shape.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: 25 degrees, just groomed to perfection, soft but firming up nicely.
To get in a little Birkie training I went out to ski the 5 and 10k today at Snowflake. The classic tracks were a work of art and the skate lane looked great as well. I was lucky enough to run into the two groomers, John G. and John G! I thanked them for the labor of love that they are pouring into Snowflake this year. Thanks guys for a great ski!

Conditions: very good skate, classic track looks excellent.
I skated all trails late afternoon today and conditions were very good. The 5K was getting over-skied and "humped" in the center in places but the sides provided a great edge with the wider deck they have been grooming this year. Some crust on the hills from the new snow being blown off but seemed just fine. The 10K was in better shape, although, the skate deck seemed to be groomed a bit more narrow than in the past. It was less skied so the deck was a little softer and more even. Re-grooming might make everything excellent. I hopped in the classic track on downhills and they were rock solid and deep. Thanks Snowflake crew for consistently great conditions this winter!

Conditions: Excellent! The 5K and SpecialK we groomed Thursday night and the classic tracks have firmed-up beautifully. 10 K was completely regroomed Friday night; fresh classic tracks and a smooth, fast skate lane.
Be careful of some damage to the trail in Banner Park/Pine Grove, where a tracked vehicle crossed the trail; otherwise it's smooth cruising.

Wonderful skating on the 5k after work. The crust is broken up so control is good and it is reasonably fast. If after dark, it is best to bring a headlamp to supplement the lights. Great skiing, thanks Snowfkake. The 10k looked good too but did not ski it.
