Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 12 to 21 of 67    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Friday, February 26, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: 2-3" bombproof icy base with loose snow on top, some very thin spots by marsh and powerlines.
Decent skiing thanks to the great grooming (thanks Jeff). Avoid first pine plantation on purple by taking red to purple (too much pine junk). Green and red trails are best. Ski early Saturday, then stay off trails until more snow and cold arrives.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: There is still some pretty good skiing out there. I skate skied on all the trails but the pink today. Most of the trails were groomed twice yesterday but the base is so hard that loose snow is quickly pushed to the side. There is more exposed ice than earlier in the week. Also more debris than earlier in the week. I was still able to ski all the trails without going over bare ground.
Watch the weather closely. It appears there will be a rapid warmup tomorrow. Stay off the trails until it is cold again.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Very good, just groomed so bullet fast with great control.
I started skiing around 10:30 and the groomer was just out. Two trees that fell across Green were removed! I skied Brown, Purple, Green and beginning of Red to cut off some of the pine debris on early Green/Purple section. Some thin spots on far end of Purple but otherwise skiing was great! Super job by volunteers cleaning up trail deadfall and grooming. Still best skiing in SE Wis!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good for skating, fair to poor for classic.
The miracle of the Greenbush micro-climate continues. Good conditions persist with a firm and fast skate deck. Only fair to poor for classic. It was great fun today after Jeff Welsh had scarified. There are a few icy spots, so use caution. Thanks to Jeff, the other groomers and all the volunteers from the Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic Ski Club who cleared a number of trees that had fallen across the trail as well as a great deal of debris. Appreciation is best shown by paying a daily trail fee or becoming a dues-paying member of the club.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed/crusty/icy/fast and a little rough...but still well covered and very skiable for skating. Grooming might make it very good.
Skated all the trails. Green trail had a few issues with walkers and a few big trees are down across the trail but it is still very skiable. (Steeple chase attempts were not successful...) All trails not so good for classic skiers with limited tracks.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: This was one of those late winter skis that make you feel twenty years younger..... until you, literally, crash. Freshly groomed (yesterday afternoon) skate deck had a bit of crust on it making for very fast conditions. The purple, red pink and brown trails were groomed. A number of us spent time cleaning the trails of debris before they were groomed. There is still some debris out there, but overall it was in pretty darn good condition. There are no bare sections yet but it was a bit thin near the marsh in one short section. The downhill curves are a bit washed out from snowplowing, exposing some ice (hence the crash). The classic track looked good in some sections and not so good in others.
Great job trail cleaners and groomers! I am looking forward to a lot of good skiing for awhile.

Afternoon

[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good. All trails (other than the Green) were groomed. New shallow track is set.
Kinda dirty. No rocks, probably use good skis.

The trails were skiable Sunday afternoon! We skied for 1.5 hours on Brown, Purple, Pink - very good workout as the snow is wet, but we enjoyed!

Grooming Scheduling
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Debris littered/trees down. Common sense applies.
People working to clear the wind damage from late last week. Unless you are willing to work clearing the trails - stay off of them. Several people, thinking the ski season is over, have hiked the trails and have post-holed their way down the middle of some trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: 5 pm: Purple loop classic track was slow due to new snow and temperature around 28.
It looked like the classic track was made by previous skiers and the skate deck had 1-2" of light snow. My waxless skis were getting no glide in places and were fair in some places, especially where merged with brown loop. Lower temperatures tomorrow morning may improve that. Good workout and very scenic, regardless!
