Broke trail on Nine Pine. It was like backcountry skiing. There was about 8-10" on top of previously packed trail. I was breaking through the original pack as I trudged along. There were a lot of trees bent over the trail that I freed and some that were a lost cause that likely will need to be cut up. It was a great workout, quiet and beautiful in the woods. Lonesome Grouse and the Superhighway had skier made tracks. I wouldn't even think of skating on it until grooming happens. I rated B skis because of the need to backwoods it around some downed trees.

Observation

Snowshoeing Otter Run this afternoon with my wife from 3:15 until 4:30. No trails set. 8-10 inches of hard pack, with 10-12 inches of powder on most of the trail. Many branches bent over trail due to snow load. Freed as many as we could, but many are still blocking any chance of setting trail without removal. Two sections with 10 foot pine tree tops 4 inches in diameter hung up across trail (but not on the ground). This is only a 2.1km loop, but took us an hour and 15 minutes to complete. I would use my backcountry skis at this time, but there are a few tight spots for sure. It was beautiful and quiet though!

Boulder could use some snow! Snow coverage was iffy with lots of grass poking through in spots. Doesn't appear to have been groomed after the latest snow, about 3" of semi-compressed fluff on top of what might have been packed down once this year. Didn't look like anyone else had ventured out on Blue Ox except for a fat tire bike. Bear Paw had plenty of tracks and a semi-decent classic track. Hard to tell what you're skiing over so definitely need rock skis if you venture out. Likely not enough coverage to set a track.

We parked at the east end. The parking lot gate was closed so we parked along the road. We had our new pup out for his first ski so we just skied to Lonesome Grouse and the Lonesome Grouse loop. The trail had been heavily used by vehicles before the most recent snow, so it's rough and rutted. But there is enough snow to shuffle around in. Grass pokes through here and there but we didn't hit any rocks.

No grooming yet but some tracks to slip into. Just did bear paw. Probably need more snow for grooming and classic tracks but glad to get out there on a beautiful day.
