Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 51 to 60 of 62    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Very nice on the manmade snow loops this morning. A layer of loose snow on top of a firm base, generally clean with a little debris. Tracks were recently reset. Some areas are a little icy from the week's warm weather. The wider trail coverage provided this year helps a lot with handling the large number of skiers, of all abilities, that are taking advantage of this local skiing opportunity.

Nice conditions on the manmade snow loops this evening. Additional grooming has opened up a total of about 1.2 km, including all the hills. Solid base with a bit of loose snow on top. Classic track is worn. Expect continued improvement as cold weather sets in.

Ridges in the frozen hard base during the night made for ok edging and enjoyable good skate skiing. The 2 foot base of manmade snow is 1k. Very good for technique and hill training. Groomers did a great job in transforming unskiable conditions. Donations are needed to support the snowmaking.

[ B skis ]
Hard base of man made snow with a slight covering of lose snow on top. Should get better through the day as more snow is worked up. I recommend B skis as there might be stray stone.

Went at about 1pm and the smaller man-made loop still had complete snow coverage. A couple areas were starting to get a brown tint but the ground wasn't showing through anywhere. Some leaves, no sticks, no rocks. Looked like it had been groomed in the morning, and classic tracks were set.

Arrived late this afternoon and expected boilerplate conditions, but was pleasantly surprised with there being enough loose snow for skating. The groomer was hoping to make a pass early Monday morning, but temps have been hovering around 32 since mid afternoon and may not dip much below that overnight. Hoping to get in an early-morning ski. Should be really good for skating if groomed, still ok if no early morning grooming.

The Lupo Loop and an up-and-back on Tail End were in great shape this morning. Skate lanes were regroomed overnight and skied much better than yesterday. Classic track from yesterday was still in place but seemed a bit worn. Best skiing will be in the morning till colder temps return. The manmade snow - which is all we have at Lapham, is holding up well.

The Lupo Pond Loop on the snowmaking Trails is open! The 0.6 km loop is groomed for skate and stride. Conditions were very good in the early morning but deteriorated a bit through the day due to warm temperatures. I advise getting there early for the best skiing. Many thanks to the Park staff and volunteers for making and grooming the snow!

Snowmaking has continued with the colder weather, and rough grooming has commenced. The snow conditions report on the Friends of Lapham Peak website indicates that the Lupo pond loop (about 0.6 kilometers) will be groomed and ready for Saturday. Be there!

Snowmaking is proceeding with several segments of the snowmaking trails covered with whales and awaiting spreading. The new SMI Polecat Snowguns have been performing well, and the efforts by our volunteers have been outstanding. Word is that a decision will be made on Thursday regarding spreading and grooming to provide a first phase loop of manmade snow for weekend skiing. Stay tuned.
