Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 34 to 38 of 38    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Classic skied all trails except Snowman loops. Coverage is good, tracks well formed and solid. A little thin on the Pincushion Loop but OK. Glide was good in spite of the sub zero temps. Lots of tree debris everywhere but it was not grabby. I did not check the bottom of my skis for scratches, but the debris is why I recommended B skis. I have skied most of the local Cook county trails this week (except up the Gunflint trail) and this was the best coverage and grooming of them all.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Base 6-7 inches, new snow yesterday 6 inches. All green loops are combed and PB, with new classic track set. Those trails are now in very good condition. Pincushion Mountain Loop reworked and now in OK condition given the lean base. Inner advanced loops/black runs were groomed today. Bitter cold forecast here, know your trails and ability.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Snowed all day on Thursday, maybe 5 inches of lake effect - and the Piston Bully went by the B and B about 5 AM Friday morning. Grooming was in process as we skied. The classic track was excellent and skating looked good but a bit soft. Cold squeaky and absolutely beautiful snow. We heard the groomer off in the distance a few times so really do not know if the whole system was groomed, but it was being worked on. Great skiing with best skis.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Solstice groomer Jim reports: 5-6 inch base, 2-3 inches new snow. Conditions improving daily, light dry snow not gaining a lot of base -- but pretty good conditions overall. Green loops have new classic tracks, set-up nicely. All trails are rolled and combed but no classic tracks systemwide until more snow. Skating deck is in good shape albeit a bit lumpy. Caution on the back side of Pincushion Mountain Trail along the river, due a thin base and a few rocks. Best of the holidays to all, from the North Superior Ski and Run Club!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Pincushion Trails system got 6-8 inches of new snow and the warming chalet will open for the season on Saturday. All trails rolled with a portion groomed for both classic and skate. Conditions are early-season while the skating deck gets leveled; flurries are helping.  We have snow and we're skiing.
