They were setting the classic tracks while I was there. The tracks are a little soft because of the amount of snow. Great sking.

I really enjoy this set of trails in the northeast metro. I started skiing at 2 pm, and it appeared that the groomer had just made a pass: there were very few footprints in the walking area, and they were very few pole plants either. Skied all of the trails both north and south of County Road F, and the tracks were in very good condition. Pole plants occasionally plunged deeply into the track, but that was less frequent the longer I skied. It has been noted in other postings, but the 400 meters of trail alongside Highway 96, especially the bridge over the open water, is covered with gritty, grimy snow plow splash: that is the one area where B skis are in order. By the time I started a second lap on the trails south of County Road F, walkers had chewed up the first 400 meters or so (to the footbridge), but it was smooth sailing after the footbridge.

The trail is in decent condition, except for the section along 96 that is gritty with snow thrown from snow plows. Nice that there were a lot of skiers out this weekend, but that has washed out some areas of the double track, so it could use fresh grooming.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The portion of the trail north of County Road F was in very good condition. Consistent dual track except by Hwy 96. It was 13 degrees and sunny. Occasional leaf litter and the portion adjacent to Hwy 96 had snow plow wake on it. Interesting how the character of that "snow" made my light green Rex ineffective until I hit the "real" snow again where it was exactly the right wax - finally.

Skied the sucker lake loop. Tracks were freshly set. It was beautiful. Well, except for the stretch along highway 96 but that isn't much.

Skied the 3.75 k Sucker Lake section of the Vadnais Lake Trails twice. No grooming, but tracks were well skied in and good for touring around the Lake. The channel between Vadnais and Sucker Lake was open with lots of waterfowl dabbling in the open water. The resident Trumpeter Swans were present as well. Beautiful!

I plowed through the 5" of snow in the tracks to classic ski the Vadnais Lake trail before sunrise. Gorgeous morning to be out with the fresh snow and lots of wildlife. Loops are usually nice but the benefit of an out and back was huge as it was so much easier coming back. Enjoy!

Trail was groomed this morning with double classic tracks. Skiing was slow with fresh snow and soft tracks, but should set up well with the cold weather ahead. Unfortunately several groups of pedestrians and dogs had already walked down the tracks on the north/east side of Sucker lake.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
The unpaved portion is in good shape though with the weather warming I'd stick with rock skis. The paved portion is unusable. Poles can't get grip and my wrists began to hurt after a bit. In some segments there are two black lines rather than ski tracks.
