2018-2019 season

Morning
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Upper Arb: Groomers did a great job getting out once the wind died down. The trails are all groomed except caution hill and the field loop along Hwy 19 where there are still large snow drifts to deal with. Plenty of base, not much tree debris, and the snow is faster than I thought it would be considering how cold it is. Lower arb also looked rolled, but no tracks set.

Skied the Upper Arb Sunday night. The groomer was out and set tracks on 75% of the trail and expanded the width. It was slow and soft with the new snow, needs time to set up and some additional rolling to be really good for skating but coverage was great and it was a pleasant ski.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The upper and lower sections of the Arboretum are groomed as of this morning. The lower Arb had a track set yesterday and all trails except one connector are groomed. Upper Arb was groomed for skating and conditions are excellent but still a little soft in places due to drifting. There is no track set in the upper at this time but will be set tomorrow are Saturday. 12k Classic tracks in lower and 6k of skating in upper.

We skied a loop from the Waterford parking lot to the Kettle Hole Marsh. Trails are all packed and many look freshly tracked. Very nice conditions. Thanks, groomers!

Good coverage, very soft and rather slow going. Poles went deep in places. Looked to have been groomed earlier in the day, but needed a cold night to set up well. A new ski trail I'd never seen before was groomed on the east side in the oak savannah, narrower and no track, but very skiable with some good hills and turns. The deer here are very tame.

Lower Arb is 95% tracked and in very good shape. Snow was pretty fast considering the temp. Tracks are washed out in just a few high traffic spots and side slopes.

We skied the lower arb trails Wednesday afternoon and it was great. Trails were packed (not tracked) with plenty of snow.

Upper arb was freshly groomed today for skate, very soft and slow, but nice skiing nonetheless. No classic track laid down, although I did hear a snowmobile going by on an already groomed nearby trail as I was finishing up, so perhaps there will be a classic track tomorrow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The arb looks pretty, but the compressed snow on the classic trails is only about an inch thick. Poles won't plant at all. On downhills, skis will occasionally rub against something under the thin layer of snow, leading them to stop abruptly. I won't go again until we receive several more inches.
