2022-2023 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 23    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Both Lower and Upper Arb are in great shape. The Lower Arb classical tracks are starting to get widened out and greasy in places. For whatever reason, boot prints etc. seem to be way down and recently almost non-existent. Enjoy!

Perfect ski from the field house parking lot area along the river on groomed trails with depth of 2-3". Little breakdown from foot traffic and easy glide on my fish scale skis. Little traffic on the trails on this 'balmy' Friday afternoon.

Excellent! Well-groomed base in excellent condition. Thanks groomers! Thanks walkers for staying off the ski track.

Fantastic conditions right now. The volunteer groomers have been out at least once (and often twice) a day in the upper arb since the snow arrived and have created a good firm skate deck all around with classic tracks set around most of the trail. I was told the lower arb was groomed with tracks set this afternoon too.

Classic tracks are set on almost all segments. It isn't very deep in spots, likely due to the icy base, leading to some sliding over the edges - particularly near the start (by the waterfall). Segments further in are in great shape.

Both the upper and lower Arb trails are tracked for classic. I skied only the lower Arb where the tracks had been freshly cut (this morning?). For the most part the tracks are very shallow (2/3) and the remainder (1/3) are fully cut. The loop nearest the West Gym parking lot was the poorest. The tracks are already succumbing to foot and dog traffic. Enjoy them while you can--it's glorious in the Arb right now.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Grooming was underway mid afternoon. I spoke with the groomer who said the classic track will be cut tomorrow or Saturday. There is some debris on the trail from the storm, mostly small twigs so no threat of damage to skis. It appeared that most of the trails in the lower arb were groomed. I saw a few people skiing on the upper arb trail as I headed home.

It was icy in spots on the groomed trails in the upper Arboretum. The trails were definitely well used since the last snowfall with some decent sized divots here and there.

No recent grooming visible. Much tree litter. It is beautiful here and while it is a lot of work to get around it was worth the trip. I look forward to using these trails again after the groomers have done their magic on it.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The lower Arb appears to have been groomed this morning. I skied in the late afternoon at sunset. All trails have been tracked for classic except the segment in the southeast corner by the Women's League Cabin site and the south boundary. Tracks are somewhat shallow and drifting was occurring in the exposed spots you'd expect. The snow felt like sandpaper because of the -10 temps and the drifted snow. Still, it was great to be back on skis in the Arb!
