Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skated Hill-Island-Prairie loop. A lot of fun on a warm day, lots of people out skiing. The snow was getting packed and firm, fast, but still with plenty of play. A little bit of debris here and there to make things interesting. Overall very good conditions. I noticed the tracks seemed to be getting a bit wet in a couple of places where there had been a lot of leaf debris mixed in but still holding its shape.

No grooming, no tracks. I gave up on two trails after a frustrating short distance. I should have known, the parking lot only had a couple cars.

Baker groomers did a great job smoothing out the skate lane and setting a deep track that the cold weather firmed up. However, mother nature had her way, and in the usual areas, the wind drifted the tracks over and in other areas, the tracks are full of leaves and tree debris. It might be best to use skin skis for classic rather than waxable like I did so you don't end up with leaves stuck to your wax. Baker never disappoints though, I had a peaceful ski with a beautiful view of sun dogs to the west and a gorgeous sunset!

Set new track on top of four inches of light powder in an old classic track. Recently/partially graded skate track was hardly used, pretty firm, and covered by light powder. Skied Fairway, island, Timber, and Prairie. Great base in the works. Kudos to grading team for efforts!

Not much to say beyond perfect! Cold snow was maybe a little slower, but all trails were fantastic for skating. Tracks also looked excellent!

Trail is in great shape. Full, firm coverage throughout. Typical early season bumpiness out in the woodsy areas.

Skated the outer Hill-Island-Timber-Prairie loop. Gorgeous trails with beautiful trees full of snow. I'd say very good condition overall with one caveat. Although the base was very good overall, with nice firm snow, there was some variability to be aware of. Here and there there were spots of hard-packed snow-dusted frozen slush, and others where the snow hadn't been packed down quite yet. Nothing to worry about but enough to keep your eye on, especially on a couple of hills. The snow coverage was excellent, except for one small spot under some junipers heading out to the Island trail, with some thick grass coming up through the track.

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied entire system and was pleasantly surprised. The groomer was still hard at work and was doing outstanding work. I noticed some of the trails had less grooming but it was still very enjoyable. Crazy how some colder temps can make such an impact on the quality of the experience. Thank you again to the groomers!

Groomers are getting the most out of what they got to work with. Plenty of grass and some mud poking through, but nothing too serious like rocks or sticks. Classic is set and looked Ok, but I wouldn't bring skin skis because of the dirt. Either way, it's still better than man-made snow.

Baker was rock ski heaven this morning. Good if thin coverage with just a few downhills that demanded care. I don't think it was groomed today, but it didn't need it. Tracks looked good but unused. It's hard to believe I skied alone for two hours.
