2014-2015 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed, good classic tracks.
Strided for the first time in a month. I was happy to find good classic tracks on almost the entirety of the snowmaking loop. Only the tougher hills had some icy chunks in the tracks. The skate deck was too hard or icy, even on my squirrely classic skis.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed, borderline icy on snowmaking loop. Fast, no, maybe not fast, but offering little resistance. Still excellent, as expected at Wirth.
Tonight's conditions seemed fast, but my lap time was down from normal, probably because I put the brakes on for most downhills. So the benefit of tonight's conditions was not in speed, but in being able to cover more distance with less effort. Exposed parts of the trail were scoured down to icy corduroy ridges, whereas protected parts maintained just enough loose snow to get an edge. It was a lesson in sedimentary geology, that will be erased with tomorrow's grooming. Warning: short spruce stems blown down on the trail along the long gradual uphill on the west side can result in a nose plant. If I had had a broom I could have swept them away. The pattern of where the trail was wind scoured down to.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
The 3.3K snowmaking loop is in pristine condition. Perfect corduroy, clean and deep classic tracks, no icy sections, perfect edging throughout. The Twin Lakes/Par 3 loop is still skate skiable (natural snow), similar to its condition on the Pre-Loppet... and it is really quite enjoyable, although "B" skis are advised. The Judy Loop is a bit more precarious and requires rock skis and a good sense of humor... probably best avoided until we get more snow.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Twin Lakes is skate-skiable!
Skied Twin Lakes twice at 5:30 p.m. There are a few light patches but generally it was fabulous. It's great to be in the woods again!

Grooming
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Trails rolled with corduroy this morning at wirth golf: twin lake trail, judy lutter loop, skyline trail(front nine). also rolled with corduroy - tornado trail, jd gardens, wirth lake, eloise butler trail, erickson and norm oakvik trails (bog), 394 trail, and brownie lake loop.
conditions thin but mostly skiable except for tornado trail (very rough), wirth lake (windblown, frost heaves), and 394 crossing (ice chunks, dirt and debris from snowplows).

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Front 9: just a bit better than rock ski conditions. Rolled, but no tracks.
I was excited to finally do a lap around the front 9. It wasn't great, by any means, but passable. Just enough snow coverage to get through it. Grass was showing through in many spots, but it was manageable. It must have been rolled this morning, which surprsied me.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Outstanding! Great classic tracks, plenty of snow for A skis.
The snowmaking loop is in fantastic condition - solid classic tracks and no icy sections on the hills and curves. A great big Thank You to the Mpls Parks team for keeping it up so great. This is really the only place to train for the Birkie. I love having the golf courses near my home groomed, but this season hasn't really been so great for that. At least we have Theo with the big hills, great snow and convenient location. Bring on the Birkie!

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Manmade loop perfect in all ways.
The groomers really have things dialed in at Wirth lately. I skied at 7 pm and even after a full day of weekend use the course was perfect with clean deep classic track and a firm but ice free skate deck. Wirth hills are the best Birkie training!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good to excellent for classic.
It seemed like the snowmaking loop was set up for classic skiing today with a double track usually appearing in the middle of the trail [ For the Mayor's Challenge classical races today -- Ed. ] . It was good to get back on the Theo loop today. You forget how hilly it is--but a great loop. If we could just get some more snow for the rest of the Theo trails, it would be awesome!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Excellent on snowmaking loop. Fair to good on Front 9.
Brought rock skis and skied on and off the manmade loop. Conditions were fair to good on front nine... Groomed, smooth, some thin spots. I was very happy to get off the manmade loop, and was not disappointed. Very good rock ski conditions. Because of the thin wind blown areas, I would only use rocks skis off the manmade loop, but more snow would make the natural snow areas perfect. Looked like the back 9 and back 40 had also been groomed, but it was dark and I did not venture out there.
