Dubay to Train in Finland

Joe Dubay climbs big Pine Hill, Rainbow JOQ, January 13, 2008
Joe Dubay, will be spending the next 10 months at the Sotkamo school in Finland, which is near the Vuokatti Sports Institute. He will pass up another shot at a Minnesota High School Championship to train with many high level skiers and even some Olympic skiers from other countries. Being able to train in one of the hot spots for development will be a big addition to Joe's already impressive ski career. He will continue to consult Minneapolis Ski Club coach, Kevin Brochman for additional advice and will have the opportunity to get more time on snow and train with faster skiers.

Some of the most successful skiers from the US have traveled abroad and done very well in their careers. Current US Ski Team coach Pete Vordenberg and 2002 Olympic hero John Bauer both spent one year training in Mora, Sweden. The school Joe will be attending is very close to the Finnish ski tunnel, so skiing on snow should be very plentiful the next year. Joe has been one of the most successful high school racers in Minnesota High School history.

Joe began his high school skiing career at Coon Rapids and won the State Meet as a junior for Andover High School. As a freshman on the Coon Rapids Nordic Ski Team, Joe placed 2nd in the 2006 State Meet. This is the highest placing a freshman male skier has had at the Minnesota State Ski Meet. Joe moved up to first in his sophomore year, and this past year going undefeated in high school and regional Junior National competitions. He topped the year off with a convincing win at the Junior Nationals in Anchorage, Alaska.

Joe has been working with Minneapolis Ski Club coach Kevin Brochman during the summers for several years now. Last fall he spent equal time running cross country and doing ski training. As a coach, I would state that Joe has been a delight to work with and he is very helpful to all other MSC members. He will be missed at the high school and Junior Olympic level.

The Finnish ski program will allow him to train on a full time level and be in an environment that has help skiers win at every level, right on up to the dream of Olympic gold. The combination of a good training environment, early snow and great coaching should help Joe get to the next level in skiing.
