Mt. Ashwabay Ski Trails
Bayfield, WI
Trail Length: 40k  Maps: | 1 Ski Lift , 1 Jerry Jolly
Groomed: Skating/Classical    Lighted: No Snowmaking: No
Contact: 715-779-3227    Weather: [ NWS ]
Notes:   A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Thanks Scottie and the rest of the Ashwabay grooming crew! John, Scott Wilson, friend Dave and I skied most of what was groomed and it was fantastic! A few low spots had some ice and some areas in the trees had some exposed leaves, but easy to avoid and wonderful skiing. Thanks again, guys!

I parked at the Jolly trailhead and found that the trails on that side had not been groomed. The coverage between the trailhead was decent, but probably not really deep enough to do a good grooming job. I was able to ski through it though without much trouble and hook up to the groomed areas. Sugurbush had numerous bare spots on it, but most of the other trails were in great shape. The parts that were open, were very nicely groomed and quite a few people were out enjoying the trails. I'd still use B-skis, just in case.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
With 3-4 inches of new snow, Bill, Steve and I did some grooming. We got Anchor, Jolly Long, Seagull, Rollercoaster, Telford, Sugarbush Dog Trail, and Sugarbush classic packed, groomed and tracked. Oppedahl's, the new skate trail, and Raven also got packed. Conditions on the core trails is starting to look pretty good.

Perfect winter day to be out skiing so early in year--temp in mid 20's and softly falling snow. Very good conditions on the close-in loops that we skied late this afternoon. Enough skiers out to keep the groomed tracks fresh, but there was a couple inches of snow on the skate deck. Plenty of snow here--no need for rock skis.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
This Morning Steve groomed and tracked Sugarbush, Anchor, Seagull, Seagull uphill connector, Sugarbush Dog Trail (from Jolly to Cabin), Rollercoaster, and Telford. There was a couple inches of new dense snow which groomed quite well. I would rate the above trails as very good except for Sugarbush after the cabin which still has some wet spots. By the end of today, the rest of Sugarbush Dog Trail, Jolly Long, Oppedahl's, Deer Path and Black Bear should be packed!
