Firsthand: Freestyle

Parked at the east parking lot, accessing the Nine Pine loop. The northern portion of this loop is in very good condition, with the southern loop a bit dirtier, and some short sections to walk. Very pleasant and fun spring skiing.

We checked out Boulder today to see what was left and it had surprisingly good cover and depth despite being out in the sun. We skied Blue Ox and only had one place we had to take off good skis for a very short part, the rest was covered as in the pictures! We also did part of Bear Paw and that was also in the same shape. Snow should stick around for awhile with freezing temps each night, maybe Friday night will be cold enough to take the groomer out!

We were really disappointed when we arrived at Boulder to find it untouched and in really bad shape. It looked like it had not been groomed in quite awhile. A fat bike had used the trail and that is probably what it would be best for right now. The skate lane was rutted and hard packed and the classic track was pretty much non existent. We thought with the warmer temps it would be skiable. Hopefully they can get out and groom it again!

We got lucky today for "Dog Days"! There was about 5" of fresh snow and fresh grooming for both skate and classic when we arrived about 1:30pm. We were fortunate to be the first skiers behind the groomers. The snow was soft but silky smooth and pretty fast. Some sections on Nine Pine and Blue Ox exposed to the wind were were already covered with drifts but it didn't slow us down. Thanks groomers!

What a perfect day for skiing! Skied on Nine Pines and Lonesome Grouse just before sundown. Tracks were in good shape for dog day Thursday. Most of the tracks were in good shape with some curves undefined and a bit of forest litter but still incredible skiing (19 degrees at 6pm). Several cars in the parking lot and met about 4 dogs and their owners (all with smiles) finishing up but rarely run into anyone once we get on trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied Lonesome Grouse and Nine Pine under beautiful clear skies and temperature around 15 degrees. Lonesome Grouse and the expressway at the East parking lot was recently groomed and tracks set. The other trails like Nine Pine were covered with a light amount of powder overnight but had been skied in a bit by a few skiers earlier today. The skate lanes seemed a little soft according to the skate skier I met. Another beautiful day at Boulder.

No recent grooming. Lots of snowshoe tracks on entire width of trail. Nice and compact surface, snow a little slow due to warm temps (30 degrees) and slushy wet snow showers. I also skied in a set of Fischer twin skins which could have affected my glide today. Woods were beautiful, saw lots of deer and rabbit sign and flushed a grouse.

Attempted to backcountry ski (wife in snowshoes) the Wolf Bay Trail today. Trailhead open for 50 yards, then unused for at least the last 2 weeks. Open water surrounding the spillway/dam. Lake ice not safe to get around to the trail and continue.

Tons of snow. 2' of snow I measured multiple times along the side of the trail. Skate deck had about 1" of new snow and was a little soft and slow. Overall trails were perfectly smooth with the thick base. Classic tracks were faster. Trees were beautiful with hanging snow. Almost 20 cars in the south lot and about 5 in the east lot so others enjoying the trails as well. Warmed up at the ski den over hot chocolate and then did some snowshoeing on the northern snowshoe trails which are even more beautiful.

Beautiful tracks set and bright sunshine on snow laden trees. Skied Love Grouse and Nine Pine. Planned on skiing at least through Blue Ox also but the wicked wind of the west stopped me as I started on it through the clearing from Mine Pine. I've got to do these trails when it's warmer than 1 degree sometime. Tracks were all great but occasionally some of that aforementioned wind had shaken some fresh snow off treetops onto them. Really beautiful ski with no one out there until I finished at the East parking lot.
