Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied the tracks mid-morning today. It must have been groomed earlier in the morning. It was great. Only bad spots were some ice on the hills where the wind blew some of the snow off. At the time I was there the skate tracks had only been used by two people, and was perfect corduroy! Thank you St. Paul Park and Rec. Note: They are removing trees, but where they crossed the trail was not a problem.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Grooming plan: We could not get a fresh groom on the course today, because our groomer got stuck at Como. Our plan is to get out early on Wednesday morning and try again at Highland.

The trail was not groomed after the big snowfall. There was a crew removing fallen branches and trees that went over in the storm -- but it's also possible that they stop grooming in March anyway. The snow varied from deep to bare ice (on hilltops). It was possible to skate around the course, avoiding the one place the crews drove onto the course. It was nice to be out and the snow was decent, but still a pretty slow slog.

The Highland 9 is still skiable. I skated with the temps still in the teens and found the skate deck hard but still in decent shape. Tracks looked good and a classic skier on skins reported good kick over most of the course with a few icy parts. Unfortunately, I saw them hauling the snowmobile away so I believe the city is done grooming. Still, Highland should be skiable through the weekend at least. Try to catch it in the late morning.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Classic skied Monday night from 6-7:30 and the tracks were holding their shape for the most part in spite of the warm temps. They were quite glazed by the time I got there which I suppose is to be expected. I went with Oslo Purple and kick was definitely lacking (conditions reminiscent of Hoigaards Classic marathon this year). Fun times still though.

Dang it with these warm temps! We get good snow and a few days later get our melt on. Skate deck was in rough shape at 5 pm. Not sure if it was groomed today. With warm temps lots of moisture in snow and it was freezing in shady spots. Which then froze all the trail "obstacles" (ski tracks, holes). It was challenging to get edge and skis grabbing frozen ski tracks. Had one biff when my ski got completely deflected and down I went. Hope nobody saw. It had zero style points.

Groomers rolled since yesterday's snow (thank you!). Skate track is soft but in fine condition. My friend skied the classic which had also just been set. Come and ski!

Good snow; heavily used but in good shape as of 10 AM. Overnight cold made the deck firm, as predicted.

I skied late afternoon. Classic tracks were in very good shape. The skating lane looked a little lumpy and rutted from people skiing in the soft snow, but still very skiable and better than the hard iceberg I observed yesterday. Hopefully it will firm up a bit overnight and then can be re-groomed to smooth it out.

Perfect conditions. Tracks well defined. Lots of room for skaters. Get out early in the day before the March sun softens everything up.
