New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

Trail Reports

2014-2015 season
Reports 15 to 24 of 39    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Monday, December 29, 2014
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Fair, skiable though hard packed with bare spots.
I was apprehensive heading out, considering earlier reports, and chided myself for not making it until after dark, though darkness turned out not to be a problem with the lights and bright moon. As previously reported the classic tracks were at least 70% grass, so I chose to skate. The skate lane was hard packed, with patches of exposed grass and occasionally asphalt. Overall these were avoidable on the flats. I decided to avoid the big downhills where a bare spot might take me by surprise, so I stuck to the 1 km loop on the south side. Snowmaking was in progress on the snowboarding slope, which made me wonder why Como doesn't use their equipment to make at least a small loop for cross-country skiers. It seems to me that many more people do cross-country at Como than do down-hill.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: 1/2" skate deck, low 20s temperature. Skied-in classic track was showing plenty of grass in 70% of the trail.
Skated late afternoon on Sunday. The groomers are doing the best they can with what they have. As noted previously, they had groomed Sunday morning. By the afternoon, the corners on the longer downhills on the east side of the club house were a bit washed out and the uphills were choppy. That said, I'll be back again on Monday. As long as the temperatures stay low and Como continues to groom, there will be something reasonable to ski on.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Firm corduroy but thin.
Como was groomed this morning. Corduroy is firm but still quite thin with grass and even some pavement exposed throughout. Skating much improved over yesterday's soft snow but leave your good skis at home. Lots of grass and dirt exposed in classic tracks.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
The course was rolled but the snow was soft. Since the course follows cart paths, it's definitely rock ski conditions. Even with classic skis it's tough not to roll a ski and catch an edge on the tar. As of noon, only a couple people had slid a ski or snow plowed, so it was very skiable. I did repair a couple exposed spots.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Fair -- skiable, but not great. Looks like the park rolled the trail, but with the warm temps the snow didn't really form a good base. Skating was challenging, and often time one would kick and hit grass or a cart path, definitely rock ski conditions.

Grooming
Conditions: Good - groomed this morning.
Spotty in some spots, but to be expected with the light snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Very thin coating of what fell this morning but good footing in front of the parking lot and 3/4 of the way around. Didn't go over the humpback.
Stayed for an hour. No problem with footing until the top of the rise, heading east on the way to the underpass. Good temperature. High school teams practicing!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Trail conditions ranged from good to poor for skate skiing (a wide range I know).
Between previous grooming and having plenty of skiers packing it down, the trails were surprisingly fast even at 34F (2-3 pm). A bit of a balance workout. On the northeast side (out of the bowl) many grass spots were present but mostly avoidable -- overall good to fair rockski conditions for skate but not beginner-friendly. The bowl is also not too bad for rock ski skating, but coming down the hill out of the bowl was dangerous due to the amount of open grass. The flat section of trail east of the downhill area was in decent shape. Crossing under the bridge is poor, with a lot of open dirt. On the south side, the section parallel to the glacier and in the sun was fair to poor, but the glacier itself was in good shape. Best classic skiing looked like it would be at the glacier and east of the downhill area; elsewhere looked fair to poor. Several re-routes have sprung up as people have been avoiding the grass, although with poorly-packed snow they are not necessarily preferable and have melted faster than the main trail.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Skate: fair overall (good for the conditions). South loop - glacier and field near parking is hard, with complete snow coverage - very skiable. The south facing return along the 8th fairway is barely skiable - lots of ice and and grass - there is a good alternate return along the center tree-line on the south side of the 8th fairway and pond. Under the bridge has been torn up by the piston bully going to the the downhill area - lots of dirt and a fresh crop of rocks - step this stretch. North side is mostly fair to good - hard, complete main trail with softer skied-in edges. A few grassy spots that are easy to go around. The climb back to the bowl has a fair amount of grass showing but is skiable, the descent coming back also has a fair amount of grass showing - If you tend to snow-plow this stretch, find an alternative route. Classic - conditions are poor - mostly hints of tracks.
Second beautiful night of skate skiing - brisk, no wind, 3/4 moon. Decent surface for medium effort and working on technique. There was an attempt to groom the south loop - not much benefit - some hints of corduroy and maybe some high points taken off. But luckily the trail is hard enough that there was not much damage - only light tread tracks, only a little dirt brought up, and only 40' of wavy stretch created by groomer harmonics.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Poor. Most sections of the trail had either grass patches or icy ruts.
I went out in the afternoon and pretty much ended up skiing at the entry point to work on gliding, because the rest of the trail was in poor condition.
