Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Got about 4" of new powder, classic trails were skied in and very beautiful with the fresh snow. No grooming today, so a better day for classic than skate.

Tracks on Sugarbush and Anchor Trails were recently set. Excellent conditions. Ventured off on to ungroomed Jolly Long and Operdahl trails. Hard going. Lots of sticks on the path and snow-ladened branches bending over the trail.

Beautiful winter wonderland! Classic tracks are awesome! Skating was little soft but very fun. If you want real skiing, this is the place to be!

Very nice classic skiing on Sugarbush and Anchor trails. Tracks were set, snow is good, in spite of the recent rain and wet snow.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Between Steve, Greg and myself, we got Anchor, Seagull, Rollercoaster, Telford, Sugarbush Dog Trail, and the new trail from the cabin to the bench on Seagull packed, groomed and tracked with the ginzus. We also packed with the flat drags Sugarbush Classic and Jolly Long. There were a lot of trees bending over, but the snow packed up nicely. I would rate what was fully groomed as very good to excellent.

Trails were looking better after getting about one inch of new snow with a dusting on top of the fresh grooming. Skate lanes were much improved on Seagull and Anchor. The top of Seagull was the best. Classic tracks were mostly skied in and looked nicer with the new snow, but still icy. I used good skis and didn't see much to hit on the trails I skied, but B skis might be advisable if skiing the lower trails.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
This morning I groomed the skate lanes on Anchor, Seagull, Power Line, Jolly Long, Dog Road, Dear Path to Black Bear, Black Bear, and Roller Coaster. I did not touch the classic tracks.
With 2 cm (sounds better than less than an inch) of new snow the skate lanes will ski very well. I would still say 50% of the trails are good to very good, 45% good, and 5% good to poor with thin spots. All of the trails have leaves and needles mixed in with only a hand full of dirt spots. The Dog Road and Jolly Long are most in need of snow, you can ski around the thin spots but caution is advised. The better conditions are higher on the ridge so unless you can't help yourself wait before you ski Jolly Long.
The classic tracks are glazed/icy with more thin spots and will need more snow before they will get any better.
Still early season conditions not suitable for your good skis.

Did a couple laps of Seagull today. The groomer had been out this morning and generally the skate deck is in pretty good shape with just a couple of icy sections, mostly lower down on the trails near the beginning of the loop. They haven't been able to work on the classic track yet, which looked icy and not much fun. There was a bit of debris so you might not want to use your best skis depending on how cautious you are, but I didn't hit anything.

Grooming

Steve and I groomed the skate lanes of Jolly Long, Anchor, Seagull, Rollercoaster, Telford and the Sugarbush Dog Trail. I would rate these as skiing good to very good. There are a couple of thin spots on Jolly Long and the Sugarbush Dog Trail. We didn't reset tracks as we thought we would pull up dirt trying to do such, so tracks are glazed to icy.

Thanks Scottie and the rest of the Ashwabay grooming crew! John, Scott Wilson, friend Dave and I skied most of what was groomed and it was fantastic! A few low spots had some ice and some areas in the trees had some exposed leaves, but easy to avoid and wonderful skiing. Thanks again, guys!
