I drove up this morning after reading the grooming report night and skated Onion River - it's firm, fast and very nice - your good skis would feel right at home. A classic track has been touched up on one side of the trail and it's not mid-winter perfect but it looked very good - deep enough to hold your skis, clean, not broken down and not litter filled.

Went out for a short ski, but the conditions were better than I anticipated so I ended up skiing the Picnic loop. The snow is in spring conditions. The south facing hills had corn snow- they were soft but not slow. Lots of snow all around. There are a few ice flows on the Homestead loop but they were obvious and not too difficult to avoid. More skiing to be had up here but you need to watch the temperature to avoid the morning freeze conditions.

Great skiing out of the Moose Fence trailhead at Sugarbush today on skin skiis which are revolutionizing spring classic skiing up here in the Northland. There appeared to be a 1 1/2 foot packed base still with no open areas. If they continue to groom there could be a couple more weeks of good spring skiing left.

Get in another ski while the temps hold out! We skied Onion River Road late this morning, one set of tracks and the skate deck had been re-groomed yesterday with excellent results. The tracks started out with some ice mixed with powder and changed over to all powder, what a delight! The skate deck was firm and had beautiful corduroy. We both used skins but easily could have used waxable skis. We intermittently used the other set of tracks for cruising down hills or double poling up hills as they were icy. The caution for the system: the system is still open but not all trails have been reconditioned so that non-priority trail downhills may be hardpacked and very fast until the snow has softened mid to later day. Come up and get in a late season cruise!

Got out to ski around 10:30 and no other cars in the parking lot. Trails were super fast and well groomed with the exception of a one mile section where someone had skied during the heat of the day on Saturday. Large ruts were what remained but it was only for a short time. Super fun skiing, one last time for me.

Sugarbush was great this morning. If you have the time to break away to Cook County and ski you should take advantage of the great trails and awesome job the groomers do. I started at 9:30am from the Britton parking lot. Skied the upper Homestead and connected over to Oberg Parking lot. There was a little frozen water near the start of the Homestead loop but it was easy to avoid. Took the Oberg Loop and then on to the Picnic Loop. There was fresh grooming from the night below on everything except for the longer segment on the Picnic Loop. It looked like the longer Picnic Loop segment was groomed Thursday night. Skiing was fast with very good control. Some of the Southern facing hills were showing signs of spring. As I was finishing about 11:30am the snow started to soften up a little bit. I would for sure recommend skiing in the morning before noon. There was definitely enough snow and it sounds like grooming will occur again tonight if it gets cold enough. It's all up to mother nature now on how long the great skiing will last at Sugarbush.

Skid the Picnic Loop -- Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! Do it! The conditions are fast with foot of snow in the woods and pisten bully trails. It is worth a visit to the beautiful and challenging Picnic Loop, overlooking the north shore. A special place to ski! 30 K and 2,000 ft of ascent in 2.5 hours of ridge, river and valley skiing!

It was a great day to ski. The trails were very good. It was perfect spring skiing. It was a little icy in some spots, but it was really fun.
