Firsthand: Classic

Scott knows how to make ski trails good, picking up sticks before grooming, intensive care grooming. Extra- credit Scott! A lot of little twigs but easy and very manageable. Fun fast!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Mostly excellent conditions. Everything except Klister and the part of Gaiter down to the marsh (thin ice on creek crossing) is freshly groomed for skate and classic. Tracks are mostly full depth and clean, skate lane looks great. A few icy spots on Little James Trail. 18 km of trails here and a connecting link to the Rib Lake Ski Trails (30km). Grooming plans: I won't be available to groom again until Wednesday, so Monday-Tuesday may see some ungroomed conditions here.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Finally - All the trails have been walked and sticks picked up, then groomed. Tracks are mostly excellent, skate lane is nice and flat and very fast (a little icy but skiable). The cattail marsh crossing on Gaiter has thin ice so I did not groom the parts of Gaiter that lead to the marsh (I would avoid skiing that section). I plan to groom tomorrow morning if we get some snow tonight. Should be great afterwards!

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
I skated the trails this a.m. (7.8km of the 18km are groomed and open for classic and skate). Used my "B" or rock skis because there are lots of tiny twigs groomed into the snow, but did not add any new scratches to the bases. Skate lane was smooth, firm, fast, but not too hard to push off the ski inside edges. Fun! Classic track is mostly full-depth and clean but there are some spots where it is very shallow and wavy.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
The trails have plenty of snow base but, like everywhere else, they are littered with thousands of big and little sticks and branches. We will be working on cleaning it up today, starting with the nearest trails and working out. Hopefully will be good to ski starting Wednesday.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
I classic skied the trails this morning and found excellent conditions and temps. Come to Rib Lake and check it out. One note of caution: stay off of the part of Gaiter that crosses the cattail marsh; open, moving water about 3' across and 1' deep that you don't want to attempt crossing until we get some colder temps.

Morning
Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Trails were groomed again on Wednesday night after the 1" of new snow. Excellent conditions on most of the trails. Snow cover is thin under the hemlocks (Skidder, Rollercoaster) but okay for good skis. Be careful on the marsh crossing on Gaiter; the snowmobile kind of broke thru the ice (it's okay, the water there is about 6" deep) - but I'm sure it's okay to ski across.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
I groomed 17 of the 18 km of trails today; turned out beautiful except for a short section on the Rollercoaster trail (the bumpy area just past the bog). Tracks look very good and skate lanes pretty smooth (dips filled in nicely). Klister trail is still too bumpy (low area, thin snow cover under hemlocks) so is not open.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Very good conditions; the bit of new snow this morning made for some fast, easy skating. I will be out of town Saturday, so will plan on grooming the trails again on Monday.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The trails (11 trails, 18km) were all rolled/packed on Monday. Most of the trails (not Rollercoaster or Gaiter) were groomed for skate and classic today. Conditions range from fair to excellent, so we'll call it good. B skis or rock skis recommended but you can avoid the dirt spots if you are careful.
