Notes

This trail is very hilly, rolling and scenic. It winds around five different lakes, through stands of maple, aspen and balsam. There are a couple fairly steep hills requiring intermediate skiing skills. A shelter with a fire ring is located on the trail.

Trail in very good shape. Little debris and thin spots mostly covered now after 2-4 inches of snow on Monday. 12 .5 inches of snow on picnic table. Unless called to other tasks I will groom it again end of week. Expect a firm base and a medium to fast track.

Got there while it was still snowing in the morning to see the groomer already at work. Skied in snowed in tracks until the lean-to on the red loop where I joined the newly groomed trail the rest of the way. We seemed to have gotten about 3 inches since yesterday. Trail is now in great shape and very pretty.

Trails are all open with very good classic trail set throughout. Fresh Lake affect snow fall of 2 inches made it a perfect experience. Good ski trail grooming, lifted up the track setter on steep up and down hills.

I was able to put down some fairly good track today considering the warm weather we had recently. There is still enough snow with only a few thin spots. I measured 10 inches of snow at the Research Station. Condition vary from fair, to good, to very good depending on the section of trail you are on, but overall I would say good conditions. The track set well with no skiers as of 3 pm when I finished. Long day, many laps but worth the end result. We had one inch of snow last night which helped mix and bind. Expect fast track as still a bit firm under base but a good 7-8 on a 1-10 scale. Many birds at the shelter thanks to Dan Wallace and friends donating some seed plus I added a suet bag.

Great conditions! Skiing this beautiful classic tracked trail is a fabulous way to experience some of the best of northern Wisconsin's rolling terrain. With its quick climbs and long, easy-cruising descents it is a very well laid out system. Just enough tricky twists and turns to add a bit of excitement along the way. Many thanks to Dan Jacoby for his excellent work of grooming.

Grooming

I groomed the yellow and green loops which are the two shorter loops at Escanaba. The outer loop around Escanaba lake was still in very good shape due to less use. Still plenty of snow to reset track with success. Parking lot was full Saturday so many sit spots to smooth. Very little debris, nice weather and 15 inches of snow in the woods. Conditions are very good to excellent. Next grooming should be Tuesday or Wednesday after the MLK Holiday.

Escanaba is one of my all time favorite trails. It can be intimidating because of all the hills and I keep wondering how much longer I am going to be able to ski it because of my age. It was 5F degrees when I arrived at 8:00 am and it was still 5F degrees when I finished two hours later. The cold temperature made the track slower than usual but I consider that a good thing on this trail. The grooming was good and the track was fun.

Groomed this morning with great results. Fully formed track with very little debris after about 10-12 inches of mid week snow. Very scenic and a good time to see animal tracks. Very good to excellent conditions.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Three days straight of snow has added 8-11 inches locally. I measured 16.5 inches of snow on picnic table near Escanaba Research Station. All loops are tracked and in very good to excellent shape. There are some small sections of drifting from very high winds last night after about 8 inches of snow yesterday but was able to smooth into just rollers. Snowing heavy at times today so tracks may be covered again. We will groom again Thursday or Friday after snow lets up. Stay tuned.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Mixed in 1-2 inches of new snow which covered much of the debris. Conditions good with 10.5 inches of snow on undisturbed picnic table. Most track fully formed with small sections not quite full formed but should not affect your overall ski. Cold weather will keep many from using the trail so the hardy will see few other skiers. Dress appropriately and be sure to tell someone where you will be skiing.
