Maplelag has excellent snow coverage, and no shortage of snow. The classic tracks were firm and fast in spots. The skiing was very good. I skied Twin Skins and they worked very well for the conditions.

Temps in the low teens mid morning made the trail a bit icy in places but these fast conditions were quite enjoyable for us Fargoans who haven't seen skiable snow for several weeks. Skaters Walz was certainly danceable today! 56"of snow this season promises to stick around Maplelag for awhile. Crossing Goat Ranch Road to ski the North Loop and Roy's Run was worth hopping out of our skis. These two runs were much less skied and consequently less icy offering mostly excellent ski conditions, not to mention a silent deep woods experience. One diversion from Roy's was a brand new section of trail this year. Kudos to the Maplelag family that continues a legacy of excellence. If ever my interest in Nordic skiing wanes I know I must make the pilgramage.

The entire trail system groomed 1-3 times this past week. Around 15km of classic trail groomed this morning, cutting new track and cleaning up a few drifted areas from last nights wind. A classic ski around lunch time found the snow holding up great despite temps near 40 and overall really nice skiing. Softened up before freezing down again this afternoon. Spring skiing conditions, bit icy and fast in the morning before softening up again in the afternoons. Next ski trail grooming planned Sunday morning on select trails. Fat bike trail was groomed Thursday evening. Closed for the afternoon but will be open again Saturday and Sunday. Try to ride early if possible to prevent rutting if temp climbs above freezing. We have a deep base of snow with cold temps down low, thanks to -15 to -20 lows during the week that will provide skiing opportunities during this warm spell and beyond.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Around 50km of trail groomed today, all double track trails as well as the only trail groomed for skate and classic, North Loup. Skaters Waltz and Suicide Hill also renovated and combed. The 2-3" of new snow from yesterday blended nicely with remnants of the frozen granulated deep in the base and temps near 0 to set the tracks to near perfection. Singletrack classic and skate trails on tap for grooming Thursday. Some of the best conditions of the year.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Just under 3" of new snow this morning that fell right after grooming and before the start of the Section races. Made for a fun day of racing. Great job to all the skiers and congrats to those going on to state. New tracks set this evening on select double track trails. We will be out in the morning grooming in the new snow. Conditions are excellent.

Today's ski started at dusk and finished after dark. The trails through the woods were illuminated fairly well with just a half moon and a handful of stars. Wearing a headlight may be helpful but definitely not required tonight. The trails are in excellent shape. Check out Maplelag...well worth the drive if you are looking for top quality trails to ski.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Most of the singletrack classic trails groomed today, mixing frozen granulated snow with the new snow and cutting track. Also touched up Skaters Waltz. We will back out in the morning cutting track on the remaining singletrack classic and touching up skate lanes.

We skied Skaters and North Loup today around noon, finding an abundance of very skiable snow. Skaters had been recently groomed with NL having the almost perfect silky amount of freshly fallen snow on it. I'm venturing to say that after it gets combed later today and sets up overnight, tomorrow will be one of those days that skaters everywhere dream about. The continued extra snow that Maplelag has received each and every snowfall since early Dec. has again this year provided for a deep enough base to withstand the past warmer spells combining that solid base with the additional recent new snow fall on top of it, plus the always meticulous grooming, it all comes together to make conditions about as good as they can get.

If you're looking for excellent, fairly fast tracks on fresh snow in a gorgeous setting, look no further. There are enough groomed tracks on natural snow to keep you busy for 3-4 hours without doubling back. This is light in an otherwise fairly dismal year for Twin Cities- area skiers. Bring your A skis and prepare to be impressed, you won't be disappointed.

Writing a trail report for Maplelag is difficult at times because the trails there are forever sporting their Sunday best. A fresh coat of snow, maybe from Tuesday night(?), made for fine classic skiing on Wednesday when I arrived at Maplelag late in the afternoon, starting after work and skiing until just before dark. The trails had been groomed and the classic tracks were firm and fun on Jib Fly and Sukkerbusk. Rootin Tootin looked like it had been given a recent pass with the groomer as well, and was equally good.
