Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 12 to 21 of 21    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
Like most of the other natural snow areas, the thaw and re-freeze has made the trails almost impossible, at least for my ability (beginner to intermediate). I attempted a few sections on the north end of the park, and while there was snow cover on most of it, much of it was glare ice. No purchase on the edges, and gliding was a challenge to stay upright. All in all, a check-clenching experience.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I skied the campground and skijor loops tonight; I had the whole park to myself. The campground loop has classic tracks set and are in good condition. The Skijor loop is good but unfortunately somebody decided to drive a truck on the freshly groomed trail from the parking lot around the south end.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Classic skied the outer perimeter loop of the golf course this morning. Double classic tracks were set but not the entire loop. No classic tracks set on the entire west end. Some icy spots and bare spots on some wind blown spots. A bit frustrating not to have classic tracks set throughout. Also, need to keep the walkers off the tracks!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All of Bunker Hills Regional Park has been groomed and track has been set for most of the park. There is some grass poking through on skijoring and the golf course but both are otherwise in good condition.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Classic skied the park trails. All trails were groomed and most of the sections had double classic tracks set on the southern end. The north end didn't have many classic tracks set, but was able to use the skate deck. Trails were soft and slow. A few icy spots under trees and a couple of spots with some dirt/grass exposed.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Everything groomed. Tracks set in most of park, but not on golf course trails. I did 4 miles and saw 5 places where there was a touch of dirt showing in the tracks. Lots of the trails had double tracks that in some places made the skate deck a little narrow. The skate deck was a little soft, and after seeing a number of high school kids it was a little beat up.

Secondhand
Parkkeepers will begin rolling cross country ski trails this afternoon once road and parking lot plowing is completed. The goal is to have all trails in the system groomed and an attempt to set classic track done by end of day Wednesday.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The trails were packed but not groomed. No tracks for classic skiing, and no corduroy for skate skiing. The temperature was in the high teens, snow sounded like Styrofoam, very dry, but even with lack of grooming most of the ground was covered with snow. On the golf course I saw only one track of a previous skier, skate style. The man at the rental/info center said they don't groom until there is more snow. I was disappointed, but after skiing I could understand the reason. After today I'm sure conditions will degrade because of the upcoming warmer weather. Im glad I went I think conditions were relatively favorable.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
I skied the 5k skijor loop a few times today with my dog. The cover is slightly better today, than yesterday, due to the dusting of snow we're getting right now, but care needs to be taken to avoid face-planting from abrupt stopping on the exposed dirt. I was able to mostly navigate the trail except for 10 foot section on the path north of the dog park. I was able to double pole off the side of the trail and went around it. There are still some icy spots as well, especially south of the dog park near the railroad tracks where the snow is packed on top of the summer walking path. I just took it slow on this section and was fine. Hopefully we get some decent snow today and the ice is covered for the rest of the week. Overall, a day skiing is better than not skiing, just don't use the race skis and be careful of ice and exposed dirt on downhills.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Bunker Park and the Skijor Loop were groomed for skating today. No track was set. Conditions at Bunker Park are decent - a few patches of grass here and there but otherwise very skiable. The Skijor Loop is in rougher shape. There are several wind blown areas with little snow and some patches of dirt, but overall OK.
