Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

2016-2017 season
Reports 8 to 17 of 45    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
An inch of fresh powder on top of crusty base. Freshly groomed skate trails on Seagull, Anchor, and Jolly loop. Estimate about 15-20 km of great groomed skating trails. For the groomed trails, good skis. For ungroomed sections, B skis. Classic trails had not been groomed but plenty of good coverage and set tracks. For those going through Birkie withdrawals, get out and ski!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The trails have held up well after the thaw. All Skate trails are open with 80% great, 15% good and 5% thin. All the classic trails are open with good new tracks set on 40%, OK on 15%, thin on 5% and 40% not yet reset. We have not groomed all of the classic yet expecting new snow to return them to great shape. Bottom line is we still have snow and it groomed up well.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
The groomers groomed and tracked: Anchor, Seagull, Rollercoaster, Telford, Jolly Long, and the Sugarbush Road Dog Trail. They also tracked Sugarbush Classic. The skate trails are 80% great, 15% good, and 5% thin. The classic is 50% great, 40% good and 5% thin. We need more snow before the classic improve. The skate lanes are really fast with a nice surface finish.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All 40k+ of core trails groomed this morning with light snow still falling. The skate lanes are in great condition and classic tracks shaped up beautifully, with about 4-6 inches of base left. Come on up and ski an Ashwa-Birkie!

Decent base and full snow coverage. Conditions are soft (minimal recent grooming due to warm temps).

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The groomers regroomed all the ski trails Tuesday night. There is still plenty of base, and the trails groomed up to very good conditions. Tracks didn't set as well in the places exposed to lots of sun.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
With 6-8 inches of new snow, the grooming crew was busy and groomed all the trails! There are no thin spots, only fresh snow groomed in over a firm base. Should be some good skiing.

Slogged through 3+ inches of new snow during a snow squall. Bad idea to try to skate ski! Classic tracks were half buried, but usually better than trying to do V1. Met one other skier starting out to classic. Ok for fresh air and exercise but not for an enjoyable ski. Skied most outer skating loops.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
With a dusting of new snow, the skate trails were regroomed and tracked today, including: Anchor, Seagull, Jolly Long, Rollercoaster and Telford. The skate lanes weren't icy, but with the firm base underneath, were nice and fast. I'll try the classic tracks out later. Tomorrow night our groomers will regroom the race course to be ready for The Ashwabay Summit Ski Race, better known as the Pie Race, on Saturday. Hope to see you there!
