Rainbow JOQ Recap

The 2-day JOQ/Rainbow Resort xc ski races (January 3-4, 2009) came with another success.

The Sat. race was all about 7" of falling snow on the beautifully groomed trails and track sets throughout the race event with the temperature reached 20F. Skiers had a great race event in the big snow fall. After 5pm, the temperature started to drop while the race organizer immediately set out a plan B for the Sunday freestyle race. The plan B of one-time postponing the race to 2.5 hours later or canceling the race was executed on Sunday morning at the race official meeting when the race site temperature was -12F at 7am on Sunday morning. The race organizer immediately reached out to racers, parents/coaches/families and volunteers. With the help of morning sunshine, the temperature reached -4.9F at 11:50am, 10 minutes before the revised race start time. The one-time delay of 2.5 hours allowed skiers extra rest/recovery time while still concluding the race event at 2pm.

Junior skiers age from 2 years old to late 20s enjoyed the two-day racing and hospitalities from the race host, Rainbow Resort. Citizen and master skiers also participated in the Open category.

On behalf of the race organizer, I want to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, racers, parents, friends and families for helping us in this successful event. Especially, I want to thank our volunteer ground crew led by Doug Schumann, JOQ race officials/TDs, to make prompt and accommodating decisions and actions to ensure this race one of the top notch races in the region.
