Skiing on Easter after mass with refreshing spring time weather, 34-38 degrees. Ski trails, however, are ungroomed. So I stayed optimistic and helped make tracks in 8-10 inches of snow. High risk here on the downhills with any possibility of injuries. Refreshing still to be nordic skiing on my classical skis on Easter Day.

Great day of skiing and grooming! Cooled down overnight allowing another opportunity to groom this morning. Track renovated and reset on Sukkerbusk, Sap Run, easy loop of JibFly and the connector to the Twin Lakes trail. Other trail groomed this week, Mother North Star has well set track with snow from yesterday that had a gentle transformation with a sprinkling of new snow on top. Skate loop gently renovated. Over lunch skate skied the skate loop and double poled random classic trails. Very nice skiing on the fresh groomed. A few areas here and there base is thin but nothing to prevent a good April ski with B skis. Grooming plans: Tracks to be reset on Sap Run, Sukkerbusk and skate loop to be refreshed this evening.

A full mixed bag of weather today. Stayed cold enough overnight to keep the base firm and solid. Heavy wet snow accumulating to an inch this morning. Clearing with full on sunshine before clouding over and another dusting of snow! Grooming on JibFly setting new track and skate loop groomed pressing in the new snow. Early evening Jonell and I classic skied on JibFly. Soft damp/wet tracks but was just nice to be skiing on April 8th. Grooming plans: Track to be reset on Sukkerbusk and Skate lane to be renovated/combed. All other trails groomed and set with with tracks will be open with variable conditions.

By my estimate, Maplelag has about 8 miles of groomed classic trails kept open (plus some skating as well). I've seen Jay grooming daily, keeping the tracks fresh for his spring Nordic ski guests. Today's snow coverage remains excellent overall, especially for April. I noted just a few small spots where the sun has thinned the snow but not enough to affect your skiing. The classic tracks were not hard or icy today, just fun to ski.

Temperatures below or right around freezing and cloud cover most the day resulted in minimal snow damage today. Tracks skied well with a refresh groom in the afternoon on JibFly and fresh track set on Poki Loki and Mother North Star for the first time since this latest snowfall. Skied all the trails groomed, which was interesting as conditions varied on each trail, but overall great skiing for April 7th.

Another great bonus day of April skiing and grooming! 12km groomed and open. Cut new track on fresh trail (JibFly and Twin Lakes) in addition to renovating and resetting existing tracks on Sap Run and Sukkerbusk. 9km groomed classic. 3km skate loop also renovated and combed. Skied all the trails groomed mid afternoon. Temperature was still in the mid 20's with brilliant sunshine. Tracks are a bit spongy in spots, Twin Lakes and Sap run skied best but overall very nice April skiing. Skate deck was firm with good structure and excellent glide. Grooming plans: Touch up grooming this evening after skiers are off the trail.

Beautiful morning of winter wonderland conditions. Classic skied the two loops groomed with tracks Sap Run and Sukkerbusk as the sun was rising and filtering through the snow laden trees. Skated on the skate loop after, both techniques excellent. Warmed up to the mid 30's softening the snow and staying at that temperature until dusk. Grooming plans: All trails to be groomed in morning and hope to set track on additional trails, JibFly easy loop and Twin Lakes.

Around a foot of new snow. Very dense and heavy with high moisture content. Cooling off and drying late afternoon. Very tricky packing but eventually was able to set track on Sap Run and Sukkerbusk for 5km of groomed trail with Ginzu groomer set track. Pisten Bully came out to pack and level on a 3km skate loop and later was combed and leveled with a Ginzu. I skied all the trails groomed as the sun popped out and was incredible. Grooming plans: Will touch up the above trails this evening.

A nice day of April skiing. Got out for a skate ski after grooming on the skate loop that consists of Skaters Waltz and Sukkerbusk and conditions skied like mid winter. Switched over to classic skiing with Jonell. Snow was getting sticky around 11am but glide was still decent. Some thin spots in the tracks but the skate loop which has been groomed a bit more still had good coverage. Good to see other folks out.

Classic skiing on Sap Run and Jibfly was very nice today between 11 and 12:30. Coverage remains surprisingly good. While I saw small intermittent thin spots in the classic track, they were very intermittent (see photos). I used zero skis today with yellow glide wax and this provided good kick and glide. No damage noted to my ski bases from gliding over any thin spots of snow in the trail. It was a great day to ski Maplelag.

3-4" of dense snow. Grooming on 8km of trail, 4km track set. Skied late afternoon not long after I groomed. Snow was falling making for slower glide but the base was firm. A few rough spots, definitely rock ski conditions but for early April..great skiing! Back out grooming in the evening, working in the additional new snow. Grooming plans: Will be back out in the morning grooming the same loop as well as packing JibFly to be tracked. Best to ski in the morning or late afternoon to avoid sticky snow when it warms up.

Onion River road is the only trail I saw that was recently groomed. I anticipated some sticking in the spring conditions and applied anti-stick to my skins. A group just finishing when I started said they had to break through some crust at the beginning of their ski but then the skiing was nearly prefect. I also found the skiing very good but starting to get soft in some of the sunnier areas. The side trails had been skier tracked and still fully covered and skiable.

Classic skied out of Briton Peak trailhead around Hogback and Homestead loops. Trails were not groomed since last weekend's snow and a single skier had skied the trails breaking thru the crust. Those tracks were too irregular to ski and for me I was not breaking the crust. So I skied on top of the crust down the middle of the skate deck and had a wonderful ski on skins. I do not think the crust would have supported a skate skier but it would be interesting to try. Temps were around freezing and a heavy wet snow laid down a nice dusting providing grip on the crust.

I arrived at 9 am while the groomer was still out on snowmobile grooming the trails. I first classic skied. Then at 10:30 am I switched to skate. I skate skied the Onion River Rd from the Oberg parking lot out 5 km and then returned. The grooming continued beyond my turn-around point. I made the first tracks on the freshly groomed skatedeck. The temp was 35 degrees and full sun. The skate skiing was a bit slow as the corduroy did not get a chance to freeze or harden after the grooming. But I still had a blast. I wish could ski a few more days, but the vacation is over for me.

I skied the groomed section of the Onion River Rd starting starting at the Oberg Mt trailhead parking lot. There were a couple of inches of new snow on top of the skatedeck. I had my good skate skis waxed with Rex red hardwax, Optiwax NF Warm liquid wax and Toko red structure. The fresh snow made skate skiing a bit of a workout. But I was overall pleased with my glide.

Great day of skiing. Still a good base. About an inch of fresh snow in the set tracks made it slow going at first, but many are "skied in" now and faster. My skin skis iced up a bit but were fine after I treated them. Skate deck might be a bit show in places but there is icy snow underneath the new stuff so with the right wax it could be fast.

John did a great job on the skate deck today and it was well used by the time we got there at 11:30 am. Temps were 35, it was cloudy and it was the same as yesterday, rutted but soft enough so it did not matter. Full coverage except by the chalet. Classic tracks were icy or fast, debris free, still in decent shape despite being misshapen and skied out on corners. Classic tracks melted enough yesterday so they were not catching us today. No bear sightings. Last grooming of the season today. Still plenty of snow to play on!

The skate deck at Snowflake is holding up well. We classic skied around 11 am today and the skate deck was soft enough so the ruts and doggy prints were not an issue. The classic tracks were still hard. The tracks are there but are a mix of icy, hard packed snow, uneven trippy stuff in the tracks and misshapen in spots. If it had been warmer or even sunny, tracks may have been a treat. We stayed in the skate lane. Full snow coverage except a few bare spots near the chalet. No bear sightings on the groomed portions of the trail today.

Word got out...Snowflake was the place to be this morning! We classic skied and many others were skating. There were a couple of inches of new snow on top of the recent grooming. Skaters seemed to be moving pretty swiftly as were we in the classic tracks. It is all snow, no ice, no ground. Tracks were a mix of good, misshapen. Someone with a dog ignored the giant yellow sign that said "no dogs today" and the leash rule at Snowflake which caused many footprints and caved in portions on the classic track. It was more mid winter than spring! Thank you groomers!

Ungroomed from the most recent snow yesterday with about 2" fluffy powder on a firm, refrozen and rutted base. The trick was to ski the 4.5k that was groomed backwards. It was surprisingly good skis and no issues with the ruts. It was just starting to soften up when I left around 9:30 am. There should be some good skis yet. Get out there and enjoy this bonus season before it all is a memory. It has been a great winter of skiing at Snowflake. Thank you for your work.

Definitely spring crust skiing! It was about 33F when I started. Tar for glide wax and tar for kick wax on the Konigsberg skis. Most of that for cleaned off during the ski. Went from below B to the 1km loop by the river down L the wrong way past M to the parking lot uphill from A. I stayed out of the tracks because my three pin bindings were too wide for what the previous skiers skied in. It was a beautiful day on snow.

Classic skied all 20k of the trails today for my last ski of the year. There was plenty of snow left and the skate deck and classic tracks were still firm in spite of the 40 degree temps. New snow dusting was corning up and skiing was slow but my skins worked well. But the tracks were still holding up and the skiing was pretty good for this late in the year. Snow was clean and there were no bare spots, not even close. Wish I could stay around for more.

The snow provided good snow coverage everywhere I skied, which did not include the short segment of dip and climb just before the West loop joins the inner loop if you travel CCW around the W loop. The first half hour was pretty icy, the next hour had great kick and glide and the final half hour was getting soft and sticky. A lot of wildlife has been in the forest since the snow. Another wonderful morning at Ashwabay! Fairly soft surface by the time I skied but the underlying deck is holding up and it made for excellent skating. Not too fast, not too slow. Again freshly groomed this this morning. Anchor was even better than Abbey and less traveled.

Got here about noon and met Dave the groomer who had just groomed the skate deck this morning. Skate deck had minor corduroy but was quite fast with the temps hovering around freezing. By the time I got done closer to 2 PM it was getting a little soft on top but there's a deep hard pack underneath so it was just great. There were folks classic skiing as well. Skied Abbey Road trail.

No Easter bunny tracks here just paw prints from the local skijourers. Abbey and anchor were groomed today to the sugarbush cabin with a good classic track and firm skate deck after a couple of inches of new snow. Thank you to the dedicated groomers here for a fantastic Easter week of skiing!

Virgin corduroy at 11:30 am today. Skate deck was excellent on Abbey. Past the cabin on Northern Lights the deck was softer with a bit of sink with every skate-off. Classic was excellent on both while the classic-only trails that crossed appeared wonderful.

I went back to ski the big loop, Abbey, Northern Lights, Seagull between summits, and The Buzz, in the afternoon. Conditions had mostly softened roughly somewhat but were still very good. Descending The Buzz, there are several icy and thin areas that are a challenge to navigate. That is why the B skis recommendation. My good skis suffered no damage.

No April fools joke - I just started my sixth month of skiing at Ashwabay this season and the conditions remain fantastic. The temperature was 32° throughout the day. Both the classic and skate lanes were fast but not icy making for some great double poling on my skin skis. I did the 12 km loop up abbey to northern lights and down seagull to anchor and the rollercoaster. The skate lane was freshly groomed and the classic track was in good condition.

5-6" of new snow fell at Afterhours last night. Greg and I skied in a 5-6k track along Maple, North Loop, River and Aspen. The new snow covered the bare and icy spots. I also groomed the fat bike trail down to the river overlook on White Pine. It's a 5-6 mile ride out and back. Enjoy.

The remaining snow softened nicely mid morning. A lot of the trail still has significant base but the bare spots and ice patches are growing. I'm estimating that 75% of the trail is snow covered, 15-20% ice covered, and 5% bare with scattered ice patches. Some sections are great and some sections are treacherous so be careful and consider wearing a helmet. I would also avoid White Pine which has many South facing sections and South Loop due to the fresh gravel that was added last fall. The grooming equipment has been put away for the year so don't expect freshly groomed trails until next season.

Skiing on the Birkie trail has been amazing the last few days! The trail is ungroomed and the ice/snow mix on the ground is only about an inch or two deep, but it provides a firm skate deck and great glide. I've skate skied 15-25km a day the last three days and I've only hit one small rock. I have skied both north and south of OO, but I'm sure other sections of the trail are similar. I happened to meet Courtney this morning and she said that skin skis were working really well despite no classic tracks.

Tech trails were mid winter conditions today, mid 20 degrees. Did not ski the comp trails, I skied on top. Freshly power tilled and setting up as we arrived. the snow was white with little if any debris. It's amazing how much snow there is in the copper country. If you still want good quality skiing it's in the copper country.

Skied the outer loop, snow was starting to get slushy, so it wasn't a fast ski but coverage is good, I put fresh glide wax on my skins and didn't have any clumping. There is slightly less snow on the lower parts near the nature center but no bare ground or sticks poking out yet. Lots of footprints on the trail here and there but the tracks are in alright shape. A bear walked around the trail quite a bit in spots, keep an eye out if you're interested in animal tracks.

Skied everything except the black loop and took the shortcut at G. No bare spots but there are a few small icy sections. The snow is somewhere between icy and slushy, not bad for spring skiing. Folks have walked in the tracks the entire trail. I took a tumble on the last hill on the skate loop when I hit a particularly deep rut from a footprint.

Skied everything except the black loop. Not groomed and the concrete barriers are up at the trailhead which usually indicates we won't see any more grooming from the city this season. There is a lovely skied in track that is washed out here and there but is surprisingly fast with the icy deck under the new snow. Barely any debris, picked up a couple sticks. I was on my good skis and it seemed like the right call, not much to worry about with how much new snow we have.

The trails were freshly groomed this morning with classic track reset throughout. This afternoon the tracks were fast and firm. The skate lane was a little uneven in spots. Skate lane was packed powder with some faster snow occasionally mixed in. The base is quite variable with only a couple thin spots on the edges, particularly in the classic track. Enjoy it while you can!
