The Great Lakes and Midwest teams had a sunny weekend of mountain racing at Bogus Basin in Idaho at the Western Championships. The athletes raced against teams from Park City, UT; Tahoe, CA; Sun Valley, McCall, Boise, ID; and others.

Saturday’s race was a skiathalon: 3k classic followed by 3k skate. The central athletes had some of the fastest transition times, with Hanna Wilsey (MW) having the fastest time in the zone of any of the girls, and skiing to a 2nd place finish in the U16 category. Taylor Barkwell 3rd (MW) also medalled, with Ella DeBruyn 8th(GL) and Amelie Isom 9th (MW). In the boys U16 race, Midwest dominated with Daniel Gladkov 2nd , Boden Sundell 4th, Eddie Snider 5th, Eric Anderson from Redwing at 7th and Great Lakes’ Theo Hubanks 9th.

The Sunday race was a tough 5K freestyle. On the boys podium were Midwest boys Boden Sundell 2nd, and Eddie snider 4th. Daniel Gladkov placed 6th and Theo Hubanks 7th. The girls had 5 in the top 10, with medals to Hanna Wilsey 2nd and Taylor Barkwell 3rd (again!). Ella DeBruyn 6th, Amelie Isom 7th and Helen Townley 10th (MW)!

Despite only racing in one age category, CXC still earned enough points to score 3rd overall for teams! A giant cowbell was the prize for this, as well as the sportsmanship award, which the coaches were very proud to see that the athletes won as well! Great weekend of racing at 6,000 feet and 60 degrees.
