I explored the trail on my way through the area. I had low expectations but it was 95% really good. Tracks are mostly gone but still enough for some help. At 1 pm the snow was perfect-soft but not sticky. My no wax skis were perfect. There are occasional rocks to look out for. Biggest challenge was a low lying area on the long loop where there was ice and water. It might get more challenging to cross that section as the melt continues but I imagine tomorrow morning will be ok. I broke through one section of ice and got my boot wet.

Penokee trail received about 6-7" of fresh snow yesterday. Groomed around noon and it could not have gone better. I think it's safe to say that this is as good as the trail will look this year! Lots of good snow, great tracks, and the trail is open for snowshoes and skijoring! The trail is a beautiful rolling layout with great views throughout, It's worth the drive:).

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Penokee was groomed this morning. It was a good morning for temperatures and everything groomed up nicely. Trail has great snow depths and the tracks got set nice and deep. It may be too soft in the afternoons, but the mornings should be excellent. If you’re looking for a great trail off the beaten path with some beautiful scenery, make the drive and give it a try!

Great stop on these fun, flowing, classic trails. Freshly groomed, appears I was the second skier on this grooming. Some twigs poking up in small segments. I was concerned when I read that snowshoeing would be allowed on these fairly narrow classic trails, but there was no damage on the trails and it appears that attentive snowshoers could stay to the side of the classic tracks. Fun trails on great grooming.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Groomed in the couple inches of fresh snow today. Tracks look great. There is some debris on the trail under the hemlock stands. The open water that crosses the trail has a snow bridge over it, but still use caution. Warning sign is posted and flagging is marking the area. It’s crossable, but at the bottom of a hill, so wanted to give a heads up about it. Trail is open to skiing, skijoring, and snowshoeing! It’s beautiful out there!

Charming old-school trail. Nicely groomed but starting to fill up with debris. Grooming crew deserves much credit as you could see evidence of the significant brush removal effort recently. Conditions were very fast/glazed. Someone had hiked up to the first trail junction and the track had taken a beating. The open brook at the bottom of the hill near the end (all loops) is still open and it’s not a good scene. I avoided taking a bad (wet) fall but not by much, and I have intermediate skills (would have eaten my kids for lunch). Attention signs (at a minimum) are warranted. All that said, fun skiing in a beautiful setting.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed in the 3-4 inches of snow on all loops, and set nice looking tracks. The wet heavy snow bent a lot of brush into the trail, but we were able to remove most of it the last couple of days. The high winds have brought down a lot of sticks, and there is some debris on the trail. Penokee is now open to skijoring, classic skiing, and snowshoeing.
