Skied South Wirth today (first day of spring). Possibly the best conditions of the year and a beautiful day.

Yesterday was pretty good - today was stellar! I had loads of fun skiing the natural trails with my buddy. Occasional ice to work around- no big deal. It was great to see tons of folks out - feel the March sun - have January style snow and temps, all around a wonderful morning!

Fast conditions with a bit of ice on sunny hills is evolving with the warmer afternoon into a bit slower and less ice.

Skate skied Eloise and the bog at 12:30 p.m. on good skis. No ice in any corner. More leaf litter and twigs than ideal. It looks like it was groomed on Thursday night, not Friday, as there was 1" fresh powder on the left side. Checked out the crust off-trail, also good. Watch out for off-angle tire tracks on the big downhill in Eloise where the trail joins the parking lot road 500m before Wirth Parkway.

Amazing day on the natural trails. Skied everything between Glenwood and 394. It could have been Feb. 18th. Great grooming, some wind blown tracks and some ice on the uphills but all very manageable. Staying out of the wind in the woods was also a plus! Today and tomorrow should be ideal before the next warm up. Blue base wax on my skins gave me plenty of glide.

Our skijor team stayed out of the wind in the woods this morning on the south Wirth trails and found really good conditions. We found some underlying crunchiness in a few places - a few places (very few) with underlying hard ice, but avoidable or able to double pole across, but super skiable with great control! We also saw a pileated woodpecker while on the Oakvik trail! Thank you groomers for the extended season!

Thought I'd go for a quick ski in the Bog and Butler. Assumed it would be cold dry snow and most likely not groomed. Wrong assumption! Freshly groomed with a beautiful skate deck. A soft layer of fluff over a firm surface made for surprisingly good glide. The classic tracks are a bit thin and a bit icy. I had no kick with green wax so I did a lot of skating on my classic gear (hope I don't get a yellow card). Will definitely skate tomorrow.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
South Wirth trails from the Trailhead south, including Eloise Butler, Quaking Bog, and Brownie Lake were groomed this morning. Skate deck is firm and in excellent shape. New tracks are full to partial depth. These trails are in great shape heading into the weekend. There are a few short patches of ice, but nothing significant. Use care at the Eloise Butler parking lot. An orange cone has been placed to alert skiers to a set of deep vehicle tracks at the bottom of the hill approaching the parking lot.

Adding to the chorus of glorious skiing conditions in the metro! Every inch of Wirth trail was groomed last night and was holding up great this evening, even after a day of sunshine. Butler and Bog continue to have great coverage, just watch the downhill that crosses the road by the Butler garden parking lot: there are tire treads that have gone through because of ongoing work there, so you'll need to take a couple big side steps across. Under 55 is thinning but is still skiable with an icy base layer. The beginning of Daylight Savings seems to embolden walkers, and indeed there were some spots with footprints on the trails today.

Skied all Wirth south trails. Snow was sticky when I went at 5pm, the skate deck wasn't as used as I thought it would be. Footprints in the middle of the trail on Erickson and Quaking bog.
