Trail Reports

2022-2023 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 32    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Sunday, March 19, 2023
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Tracks are shallow but still good for the most part. Debris is pretty much not an issue as it's mostly melted below the tracks. Some fast corn snow and some decent unmelted snow. A very few bare spots in the usual places. The tracks are heavily trampled in some areas but not in a very problematic way.

Soft, slow, good tracks. No herringbone needed on uphills, agility and balance required on slow downhills. Some leaves but of no consequence.

Skied Battle Creek East and have to give Kudos to the groomers. This was my first time out in Battle Creek (due to recovering from rotator cuff surgery last fall). Being several days since the last snowfall I expected the trails to be well worn down and destroyed by walkers as they had been in previous years. They were great! Especially for mid-March! Having two sets of classic tracks on one side, and corduroy smoothed on the other side apparently works well for keeping the walkers off the tracks. Thank you groomers - a job well done and much appreciated. As far as classic track conditions - overall pretty good - of course there were warm slushy spots in the sunny areas, but very skiable.

Plenty of snow but not groomed! There is a fairly decent classic track and sometimes two, but footprints in several parts. And it was somewhat slow striding.

The trails had not been groomed after the latest snow, but fairly well skied in by skiers on most of the trails and I skied in tracks on one of the interior loops. Several areas were pretty badly tracked up by walkers. The snow was slow and sticky, but no leaves on the trails, the fresh new snow was beautiful, and there was a lovely light snow falling. Any day skiing in my happy place is a good day. Just hope the groomers will be able to get there tomorrow.

10:30 AM and just finished skiing the easy route. The route is full of foot prints, many of which are now frozen into the track causing unexpected braking. Other areas are solid ice. Overall, the conditions are pretty lousy. I would not go around a second time. It would be nice if there was better signage to inform people why they want to stay outside of the classic tracks.

Some bare patches, a lot of leaves, bark, and shoe prints in the classical tracks. Also very icy in several parts.

Unfortunately, large sections of the trail have really been damaged by walkers (much of which seem to have occurred this afternoon). For a lot of the trail, there is a great walking path that has been created next to the ski trail and many walkers are using it. However, I did encounter several walkers with their dogs walking right on the ski tracks. When I tried to nicely explain that they were damaging the trail, I got some very rude responses. I have called the Park Service and left a message about the walkers - given that passes are now required I do think there needs to be better signs about how to properly share the trails.

The trails were in very good shape, and it was apparent many folks had been out skiing on them yesterday. Mostly clear of debris, but for the occasional leaf on the north end. I had the park to myself until I finished my ski, and then several people were getting ready to ski. Perfect day for it! Grateful for groomed trails.

Glorious! Trails nearly pristine. The soft snow made climbing hills easy, but was a bit slow. Who cares? It was absolutely beautiful!
