New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

Trail Reports

2019-2020 season
Reports 51 to 60 of 66    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Monday, December 16, 2019
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Como is mostly very nice - just three spots where there is ice, but easy to go around. The bare pavement in the trees coming out of the bowl has been shoveled and is now covered. The shoveled snow is soft and uneven but skiable.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Careful on the short, steep downhill section in the northeast quadrant. Under the pine trees is only a light dusting of snow over the pavement. This will damage your skis! Go around the pines. Rest of the trail system was decent.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
No grooming after snow on Thursday and it was snowing as I skied. Tracks were shallow but set and usable. Ice on the hill near the rope tow, but otherwise very nice conditions considering the thin base. It was hard to find the trail at the start but once I found it I could follow easily.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Trail was mostly pretty good, classic tracks are now set on all the useful climbs, track could be omitted on the sharp 90 turn at the NW corner of the clubhouse (the turn would be tight on the flat but no one will stay in the tracks there coming off the hill). There is a spot with very heavy leaves along Lexington - worst in the track but easy to step around. There is a very thin and icy stretch at the top of the ridge going back toward the bowl; and the is a big area of bare pavement coming back from the bowl just before the last steep drop coming back to the flats - be very careful in the area, especially at night - go around the trees. The rest is quite nice.

[ Trails Open: All ]
Feeling frustrated that no one has submitted a report on Como lately, and not wanting to invest in a trip there only to be frustrated, I decided to run over there this evening. (The old trolley track that dissects Como Park is a favorite for winter trail running as are the trails parallel to Hamline!) There were only two cars in the parking lot at 8:30 p.m., and one lonely skier on the course. But he reported very good conditions. The only problem spot, he said, was usual one, the steep downhill by the downhill ski slope which has a couple of bare spots. So I plan to go there tomorrow. I would have then checked out the U of M golf course, but an hour of running through deep snow or on icy sidewalks was enough.

Morning
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Trail was regroomed this morning and tracked as much as possible. After a couple of warm days there are more thin spots and some of them are on cart paths so be careful please. We'll take a couple days off so that this base hopefully lasts through the weekend.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
By the time that I was able to ski this evening Como has certainly been well loved. The easy loop by the zoo was in better shape than the north loop but both sides had seen lots and lots of use today. The classic tracks were bare in spots and icy in others with a few washouts and widening of the track as should be expected from heavy use. The skate deck was icy in spots as well (especially on corners)but, in general looked to be in better shape than the classic tracks. It is great to see this resource get used but that use made skiing challenging tonight.

Fantastic conditions at Como this morning! The full 5km loop is open with great snow coverage and a well-packed trail. Big thanks to the St. Paul Parks and Rec crew for the grooming.

Groomer was out when we arrived at 9:30 AM. Como is in excellent shape for skate, firm and wide; classic tracks are set, maybe a little shallow in places. Two or three frozen wet spots and two spots where grass is showing, all easy to avoid. Skate trails are wide, allowing easy passing or side-by-side skiing in most places. Beautiful sunny morning for this workout!
