Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Skied from OO to the start. Enough snow (about an inch?) to cover the corduroy. Tracks were good - not used much since groomed. Not much traffic. Cold snow made for slow progress. Hard to know the right way at intersections in the last 2 km. Beautiful, fun place to be in spite of the cold.

Great ski this afternoon on OO north, at -2 deg. Expected sand paper but the recent corduroy afforded us unexpected glide. Thanks to the groomers. Great to see all the young kids coming out as we were leaving. If you can keep the ears, face and toes warm it’s worth getting outside.

Groomed to perfection! Piston bully was out re-grooming the skate lane and one classic lane south of OO. We skied about 7km south of OO. I completely overdressed and had to stop and take off layers part way through the ski. Don't be scared to get out and ski in the cold temperatures, conditions are excellent right now!

At some point in today's ski I crossed the Birkie classic trail which was freshly groomed earlier today. And since my fingers were not numb yet I chose to follow the unblemished corduroy. The Classic trail is freshly groomed and beautiful from at least Timber Trail back to the Start. Also freshly groomed are most of the in and outbound segments and various connectors. The Birkie skate trail proper was groomed recently but long enough ago that the corduroy was mostly full of fine wind blown snow. Which, at this temperature might as well have been sand. Still well worth it. Green wax, the finest grind you have and bundle up.

Deep hard classic tracks! Skate trail freshly groomed but has a ridge down the center in a number of places. Plenty of room to skate on either side of the ridge, but why would you skate when classic skiing is so much more fun in the cold?!? Skied south of OO about 8km down and back.

Trail ran along Birkie (not on it!) from Mosquito Brook south, Beautiful white, spotless corduroy and perfect classic tracks! Nothing but whiteness. Time to ski it tomorrow!

Morning
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Good skis ]
Classic skied Birkie trail between OO and Boedecker. Grooming was excellent. It was a little drifted, windy, and cold in the open area as expected, but except for that a very pleasant ski. Tracks were full depth and hard, a little slow due to the cold. Another skier reported skating was good, just a little slower than classic. Thanks for the grooming. And did I say it was a beautiful day on the trail?

I skied north and south from Mosquito Brook. The trail had been groomed this morning but only on one side at the time. The groomed side was lightly travelled and the other side was heavily used. The ungroomed side was actually faster if not easier. There were few dirty spots and minimal tree litter. The classic tracks on both sides were really nice.

Classic skied from OO south to Gravel Pit Road. Tracks are excellent since they groomed for the Seeley Hills Classic on Saturday. About one inch of new snow Sunday morning slows things down a bit but excellent skiing. Skate deck is very nice but a bit slow becuase of the new snow, but not complaining about new snow! Blue kick wax day so all good!
