Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Skied Boedecker to OO on classic trail and back on skate. Classic trail has not been groomed. Tracked only from other skiers. Skate trail is fairly skied.

Mosquito brook to gravel pit. Wet, heavy, slow. Beautiful as always and nice to have some fresh snow but don't expect to go fast. Even if it was groomed last night probably wouldn't set up with the warm temps.

I skate skied on skate trail from start to fire tower and back late afternoon. Freshly groomed and PB groomer was going back north and setting two tracks on my way south. Grooming stopped at fire tower but from grooming report it sounds like it now goes all the way to OO. Good skis OK and downhills were fast but a little soft for gliding and poking on flats and uphills. Great job groomers!

Oddly magical. The base is still thin and it has not been groomed in a while. However, all that rime ice that has been coating the trees for the past week or so has finally started to fall on the trail. The result is a half inch of ice crystals that are both lightning fast and easy to edge on. More snow would certainly be welcome but the existing base has held up and is still very good skiing in most places. At least north of OO where I tend to ski.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I skied from the Birkie trailhead to Boedecker on the skate trail and then back via the classic trail. It looks like the fresh powder on the trail (about an inch of powder in the tracks, less elsewhere) was blowdown from hoar frost on the trees. In general, all the trail was covered, though it is thin in places such as the top of the hills. Mostly the tracks were well set. Some of the skate deck was glazed, but mostly pretty nice for the amount of snow we have. It was a beautiful day for skiing today.

I skate skied OO to Trailhead on Classic and back on Skate Sat and Sun and also skied from Hatch across 77 on new bridge and back to Mosquito Brook Saturday. My observations are: 1) The new birkie trailhead course is amazing. I can’t wait to see the CXC races there this weekend. Kudos to planners and people who did all the hard work! 2) Most of the rest of the birkie trail was pretty good. A little hard packed and rutted in spots but overall good. I was surprised the south end was so good. The worst section is classic north of timber trail for about 5K. 3) Sunday we got ‘snow’ which was probably the frozen fog blown off the flocked trees. The coating was just enough to fill in some ruts and make edging on turns easier. 4) So sad to see the logging north of OO wipe out the beauty of the pines/trees of the birkie trail. The two pictures were taken in same exact spot. One in dec 2019 and the other Sunday. Hard to believe it’s the same spot a couple K north of OO. It’s looks even worse in person. 5) The snow mobile crossing in the picture on skate and same trail on classic is one to watch out for. A little drop and rocks mixed in -- others weren’t so bad. It’s a great base to build off of. I used B+ skis and felt good as the low/dirt spots are easy to avoid.

Skied south from Timber Trail (on the skate trail) to Boedecker. The classic track was very good. Skiing back north on the classic trail was a quite different. Snow coverage is fine, however the classic track is set so far to the side I was fighting blackberry briars and brush quite often.

Skied from the Birkie start down to 77 on the skate trail. I was a bit unsure of where the trail went after crossing the new bridge over 77, but I did not see any grooming, contrary to the birkie website which said it was groomed to the lake. Conditions were generally good with quite a few dirty spots. I used B skis but you would be fine on good skis with a little bit of care. Whole thing was nicely tracked.

I skied BTH loops the last couple of nights, near perfect for skate and classic. The ABSF trail krü is doing a bang up job there - Thanks!

I skied between Hwy OO and Boedecker Rd. The trails are recently groomed and not yet heavily travelled. The base is thin enough that there a few dirty spots. The classic tracks appear to be in very good condition. There are classic tracks on both sides on the "freestyle" trail but on only one side on the "classic" trail. I also skied the loops south of OO. Conditions there are also good.
